I''ve been lurking for a while now, and I had to post a question about a couple of the settings I''m looking at. The diamond is going to be a 1ct round diamond. The first setting I''m listing on here is one that I REALLY like, but I''m concerned it might be too thick/bulky and might distract from the center diamond. The other I''m looking seems much more conservative. I honestly don''t know which she''ll like better, so I thought I would ask for advice.

James Allan Knife Edge with Sidestones

WF Micropave Legato

What do you think?

I really love the JA setting - it''s more unique, IMHO!

I say Legato! I would worry the JA would overpower the diamond, plus the Legato seems (to me anyway) to be more classic and timeless

You might want to take into consideration how big your GF''s fingers are. If she has small fingers the JA may be overwhelming. Bigger fingers and the Legato
may look very small on her. Also, how rough is she on rings? I have heard that you need to baby pave settings like the Legato. Although it doesnt have to
much pave on it. Also need to take into consideration what kind of wedding band is she going to wear with either ring.

Have you considered just getting one of those mounts that holds a diamond and letting her choose her setting? That would be the ultimate expression of love
for me

. Letting me have input into the ring/setting that I will be wearing for the rest of my life - SWEEET!

With all that being said, I cant really tell you which one I like the best. I like them both. I have 7.25 fingers (fat - but I''m not

) and I would think the
legato would be too delicate on me (but that is ME). You got to figure out what is right for GF and I vote for the mount that holds the diamond and
letting her choose!

Legato!!!

Legato hands down. The JA setting is a bit masculine IMO.

The Legato was a setting I was seriously considering but I tried it on at Whiteflash and it was very delicate, too delicate for me. I have a size 5.5 finger and I guess I just expected it to be a bit wider. But really it''s a matter of personal taste... Is there a way you can find out what your GF prefers?

i ended up going with something similar to the Legato. It''s made by Gabriel & Co. (GOG carries it)

my gf likes the thin bands and the prong setting on it. She has tiny hands at ring size 4.25 so the thinner bands look good on her. I found a thread on here from someone with the same setting (though I bought a princess cut not round as in there pics).

Legato, definitely. Pardon my bluntness, but I don''t care for the first one too much- it''s more masculine and would detract/distract somewhat from a diamond IMHO. (Sorry!)

Still, settings are for sure one thing that nobody can dictate taste on... if your GF wants something like the first example, definitely go for it!

Another vote for Legato, I think it is more dainty. When I saw the other one, the words that came to mind were "steely" and "metallic."

The legato almost ALWAYS wins for me. I say legato, hands-down.

Ditto! Legato owner and fan here. Its classic, but with that twist in the wires that adds interest.
JA does nice work, but imho WF make higher quality.

I also agree that JA one is quite masculine and ..well, clunky. Its not one of their better ones imo.

Definitely Legato here too! The setting is gorgeous, simple, and will make the diamond pop! In my personal opinion the JA setting looks a little outdated...no offense meant to those who love it.

I like the JA setting more, it''s really pretty.

I think the setting you decided to go with will look fabulous with a princess!! Can''t wait to see it!!

Definitely the Legato. The JA setting is not feminine or delicate enough for my tastes. It looks halfway stuck between a man''s and a woman''s ring.

However, overall I would get a temporary setting and then let your GF choose after you propose.

I think it is commendable to want to choose the perfect setting - but, there is a but.

I feel that you are ''proposing'' to spend a lot of money on a setting - and you cannot be sure she will love it more than any other.

I ditto the comment to propose and allow your FFI to choose her own setting. I would just propose with the temp tension setting - I would not even spend the $250 on the plain setting.

What do you think?

I agree with Vanessa_B and Steel. The JA setting is unique, but a little bulky for the diamond IMO. The Legato is beautiful and dainty, but it may be a little thin. Maybe something inbetween? A simple, temporary setting is a great idea. That way, she can get a feel of the diamond while trying on different styles.

OK, you guys confirmed my suspicions. I like the look of the JA, but it is probably too bulky for an engagement rings on a woman''s hand. I appreciate all the help. This is a tough process - primarily because it is going to be a surprise. I don''t even know what size ring she wears! (Any suggestions on what I should do there?) I like the Legato, but I haven''t decided that is the way I''m definitely going to go, so I''m going to keep looking.

Thanks for all of the advice, it helps a lot.

Hey Aces,

Is it a complete surprise (like she has no idea you''re even thinking engagement)? If not, and she suspects something, it might be worth it to take her to a jewelry store to get her finger sized and find out what style of setting she likes (something more substantial, like that JA, or something very thin, or something else altogether).

If it IS a complete surprise, I ditto the other suggestions about proposing in a temp stone holder, or if you want her to be able to wear it, the basic $250 6-prong or 4-prong Tiffany setting from WF and letting her pick the setting later - it can be a great process for both of you! But if you need her ring size, does she wear any rings, esp on her right ring finger or her left middle? You can try "stealing" one if she won''t notice and estimating from there

i would say it really depends on your fiances style.........if shes more feminine/girly/ more into fashion, id say the legato, also from a woman in her early twenties perspective, i''d think every woman my age to about 28 would prefer legato too.... but that proabably refelects me and my style, im a nyc girl.....if shes something otherr than the stuff ive listed than the first ring, but yeah like other people stated it might be a good idea to go to a jewelry store and show her some rings similar to the style of each ring, and see which she prefers, you could tell her its just to get an idea...for the future maybe, if you guys know that you will get married one day, or if she knows its coming soon, even better, but if you want it to be a complete suprise, my advice would be legato, based on my criteria though, good luck!!!

Maybe you can get one of her girlfriends to help you out. One of them can pretend to "borrow" one of her rings for an outfit. Then you can take it to a jeweler to get the size. When she gets her ring back, she also gets a proposal.
