Engagement rings with spiral / coiled / wrap-around bands

Hi guys! My partner and I just bought a stone (3.75ct GVS1 emerald cut) for a custom engagement ring, and I’m hoping for some inspiration/advice on the setting!

I’ve always been partial to jewelry that wraps or coils around the wearer (e.g., Juste un clou, Serpenti tubogas), and so I’d love to have something like that for this ring. Sadly, I don’t see many options out there featuring ECs (mostly pears) or >2ct stones in general, with the exception of rather ornate multi-stone cocktail rings and high jewelry.

The closest thing I’ve found would be Stephanie Gottlieb’s “band and a half” style and the spiral rings from SG, SHAY Jewelry, and the like, but neither are totally hitting the mark.

1. Is there a specific term for bands like this? I’m over here googling iterations of “asymmetrical open half split shank spiral band engagement ring”, and the word salad doesn’t seem to be getting me anywhere lol.

2. Any recommendations as far as who would be able to make something like this AND be cool with using a diamond I already own?

3. Practical concerns (comfort, security, etc)?

4. Please feel free to share any and all remotely related eye candy.

Thanks a million! 91B2019E-7E0B-4ABC-AC96-3BC7385A584F.jpeg AA0FA736-48FB-4246-A730-9356C4BF1510.jpeg EA9A00C1-191E-489A-8605-C7D2A33B1E0A.png 3C8D3E40-B0D4-47D1-973A-8001624C95D8.png FEA96659-E721-47EC-B96B-F5F3CF0A9E45.png 906D694B-F91A-4F67-B16D-5E01E21658E8.png 2824C562-0D79-4403-AD32-D2DE0A326EA4.jpeg

i don't know of a specific designer to point you to but just wanted to say those designs are neat. i think your practical concerns with an emerald cut of that size will be protecting the corners and making sure the basket has more than one connection point to the band if it will be as thin as the inspiration photos. congrats and i hope some people come along soon with recommendations!

I would probably reach out to one of the hand forged vendors. Victor Canera or Maytal Hannah

Congratulations on buying your diamond. I have one similar to what you are looking for but it is a pear, not EC. I too love the Serpenti design - I have the watch. Both watch and ring look great together:). I got inspiration from Taffin jewellery

Taffin has done one with a step cut stone but it looks as if it's offset?

Lastly, I thing that SG does do custom work with your own stone, perhaps reach out to her.
Good luck, look forward to seeing what your ring will look like.

Holly - as you can probably tell between my previous thread and this one, I’m all over the place in terms of setting styles! I adore your Taffin-inspired ring, and the step cut version is too cool! I need to see more of your collection - it seems like we may have similar tastes. Always happy to meet fellow Serpenti lovers. I was considering one of the blingier Serpenti rings for my e-ring, but my partner insists on getting me something more traditional.

I think you’re right about SG doing custom, but I think they’ll only work with heirloom stones - doubtful a new MMD would qualify, but worth an ask.

As a side note, I’m incredibly envious of your Serpenti watch! It’s been on my wishlist for a solid 15 years. I’ve been stalking Chrono24 and consignment shops for the SS double tour tubogas at a good price. Last year I had the chance to attend a high jewelry trunk show at the Bulgari boutique, and I think I tried on every Serpenti Secret watch in the joint — maybe I’ll own one in my next life!

Thank you for the recommendations! I’ll definitely be going hand forged for the sake of strength/durability.

Thank you, I’ll make sure to request more than 1 connection point! I’m hard on my hands and, by extension, my jewelry. I will most likely go for a wider band than in the inspiration pics, and will skip the pave (although I’m considering 1/2-3/4 eternity with channel set baguettes). As far as the corners, do you think double claw prongs would offer enough protection? Maybe flat tab prongs? I’d rather not do collet/bezel set, but if that’s the only safe option I’d be open to it.

your jeweler would know better but i think tab prongs would give more protection, i love the look of double claws though!

these taffin designs are so cool but when i see them i just think, i would totally chip that ;-)

Same! I would obliterate the ceramic in no time. But it sure looks awesome.

I will check with the jeweler (whoever they end up being!) on which prong type will give the best protection.

We do have similar tastes :). I have an EC - not as big as yours, I'm currently saving to get a larger one haha.
If your partner wants a more traditional style ring for your engagement, have you thought about getting the Serpenti as a right hand anniversary band?

I love it when my boutique has a high jewellery event - eye candy galore

Yes! I like the RHR idea. Also considering a smaller serpenti or medium-ish viper as a wedding band to wear in place of the e-ring at work (I occasionally have to wear nitrile gloves).

That's a great idea.
