Hey,

I''ve decided that I want to get engaged. I''m going with Blue Nile. I''m looking for advice/suggestion as to my choice of diamond. Currently I''m looking at this diamond: .27 carat, ideal cut, D color, SI2 clarity. I''m getting it set in 4-prong tiffany style ring.
Thanks!

Johnny

You may want to go a bit bigger in size and lower color. I generally suggest somewhere in the GH color range the difference once mounted is not visible to the untrained eye.

Is the one that you''re looking at $341?

I agree with dropping the colour a bit and going with a larger stone. Do you have a reason for liking the .27 best in your search?

I am on a tight budget and want the most bang for my buck. I ultimately want to purchase this ring for under $800. My diamond price range is between $300 and $400. I had no specific reason for choosing that diamond other than thinking it was the best diamond for my budget. That is why I wanted to receive input from others before making the purchase. If there are diamonds on Blue Nile that you would recommend are better, I would appreciate the suggestions and would definitely make the purchase based on your professional opinions.

I would def. drop the color. You can go lower on color and as long as the diamond is cut really well it will look nice, bright, & white. If you drop the color you can also get a slightly larger stone.

Are you open to buying from another vendor besides Blue Nile?

FYI, none of these are professional opinions. We are consumers who just happen to be crazy enough to look at diamonds a lot!!

At first glance, what about this one: BN .37, I, SI1

Lorlei is great at finding stones, hopefully she''ll come along and provide direction.

I think I have narrowed it down to the following three diamonds:

Diamond 1 Possible, but BN will not be able to tell you if it is eye-clean

Diamond 2 NO

Diamond 3 NO

Thanks in advance.

#1 gets my vote, although the one by Addy is good too if you don''t mind the fluor.

I think I have narrowed it down to the following three diamonds:

Diamond 1 1.1

Diamond 2 5.6 - Good - Only if price is your main criterion

Diamond 3 4.9 - Good - Only if price is your main criterion

Thanks in advance.

Of those three, the first has the best cut.

Should I stay away from SI2?

The problem with BN is that they are a drop shipper. They never see the diamond. Typically you can call the vendor and ask them to pull a stone for you to check if it's eye-clean. BN can't provide you with that service.

But SI2 has nothing to do with why Stone-cold and I both liked the first one. It's all down to cut, not colour or clarity.

Less likely chance of an eye-clean stone, but with that size, maybe you might want to risk it? Check with BN to make sure it is eye-clean.

EDT:
BN can check to see if eye-clean. they call up the vendor with the stone, but result might not be accurate.

SI2 is fine if you are dealing with a vendor that can eyeball the stone for you and tell you if it meets your standards for eye-clean. As BN is a drop shipper, they do not have the diamonds in house and can''t talk to you about them. That is why I asked earlier about a different vendor. James Allen would be a good choice, as their pricing is competitive with BN, they offer a discount to PriceScope members and have people that will look over diamonds for you and give an honest opinion.

Plus, with some of the other vendors, such as James Allen, they provide a photo of the diamond online that you can look at. Blue Nile doesn''t. The setting prices for James Allen, Blue Nile, and White Flash are are comparible, I just checked. Between $250 - $390 for plain white gold or white gold with platinum prongs.

I checked our GOG and Whiteflash and at those vendors you are not going to get higher than .30ct for your budget unfortunately. In this situation, I think using a vendor like Blue Nile is a very good idea, you just have to check out the diamond specs and choose the right ones! If you can weed through all the chaff, you can find very nice diamonds for less than the major PS vendors will charge. They have a 30 day return policy, BUT no upgrade policy. So if you think that you might want to upgrade your diamond in the future Blue Nile is not the place for you.

That said, I recommend this .47ct, G, SI1, diamond here: http://www.bluenile.com/round-diamond-1-carat-or-less-ideal-cut-g-color-si1-clarity_LD01440311?__fun_frm=i&filter_id=0

It scores 1.6 on the HCA which is within the TIC range (this is good!) and the price leaves you room to purchase a simple gold solitaire setting. You will need to call BN and ask them to call the supplier and check if it is an eye-clean stone since it is an SI1. ETA Even if they cannot call the 30 day return policy means that you can send it back. An SI1 of this size may well be eye-clean.

You can also record the GIA number of any BN diamond and then a company like Whiteflash can call it in for you to purchase from them. If the diamond meets their approval it will qualify for their upgrade policy, and WF has less expensive settings than BN so you can get a larger diamond (simple solitaire = $250 at WF and $400 at BN)

You mean a 0.37c... :P I was wondering how I could miss that size stone in the budget...

Yeah, I just checked the other websites and was disappointed at the cost and selection for anything around 1/3 carat. BN might just be the answer!! I do like the F, SI2, .33 you picked above.
