Hello, I am new to Price Scope with no diamond knowledge at all. I hope I can receive help from the community about finding a ring that is the best bang for the buck.

I plan to propose to my girlfriend of 4 years in the next coming month. We are in a long distance relationship and I plan to surprise her when she comes to visit me. The ring I am looking for is a round diamond shape with a solitaire setting in platinum. I like a very simple and traditional ring similarly to the Tiffany Setting. My budget is around $6000 and I wanted to know in terms of color, cut, and clarity what should I be looking for to get the most value for my budget? I have been saving up for this ring, so I wanted to make sure it's perfect.

Thank you,

Tony

Hi Anthony - I don't know much, but check the featured sponsors on the Resources tab. Hopefully some of the knowledgeable folk here will chime in soon.

In my opiniona G/VS (1 or 2) would be considered a sweet spot by a lot of people. However, on PS we tend to drop down to
SI1 and depending how sensitive to color down to H or even I to get a larger stone within a set budget.
At the SI1 level you need to ask if the stone is eye-clean.

You need to set aside atleast $1k for your setting which leaves $5k for the stone.

Edit - if you are looking for top of the line...

Hi!

As a recently sparkle obsessed girl I would say YOU MUST get an amazingly cut diamond!!!!

I have seen numerous Brian Gavin signature round stones in person (i recently met him in person- twice!!- and chose a diamond and this setting http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/classic-tiffany-style-half-round-18k-white-gold-5478w18) I have to say his diamonds are all blindingly beautiful and the color is only noticeable from the side. This particular one is eye clean and she will be proud to say it's over a carat!!

I started diamond shopping thinking I wanted a colorless VVS diamond but after insane amounts of research and youtube videos I discovered that the best cut diamonds will allow you to go down a little in color/clarity to gain TONS OF BLING!!! My parting words to you are if she's young and stylish do NOT get a teeny rock!!! (Unless she has a minimalistic style or job that makes it difficult to wear rings)... also, you should call the brian gavin people! They are very helpful :appl: If you would like another option I would also recommend Whiteflash A CUT ABOVE (My friend recently bought a beautiful ring from them).

PS. I went to every store imaginable (Cartier, Tiffany, Ben Bridge, Zales, DeBeers, Robbins Bros, Zadok Bros, David Yurman, etc.) and will tell you BUY ONLINE!!! If you have questions about particular stones, post them on the site and millions of diamond nerds like myself will chime in :wavey:

You say you prefer a simple round solitaire. That's good information.

But you aren't the one who will be wearing the ring.

What does your lady like?
