So, I''m planning (and have been for months!) the purchase of an engagement ring for my significant other, but I can''t decide on the stone. I know she wants something that looks "classic", so I''m thinking either emerald or cushion (around 1+ ct). I like them both, but I like that I can get a bigger spread in the cushion. I''m a bit concerned that a 7x5mm emerald would look to small (she''s a 4.5 ring size). However, shopping for cushions online is difficult since stones of similar specs can look so different.

So what is everyone else''s thoughts? Cushion or emerald? Is a 1ct emerald too small? Does anyone have pics of what a 1ct emerald solitaire would like like on a size 4.5? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I''m driving myself crazy...

Hm. Those are very different looks. I''m a huge EC fan, but the only cushions I like are ones that resemble antique cushions.

Also...are you sure she''s aiming for an EC or cushion when she says classic? For many women "classic" translates into something like a simple Tiffany-style solitaire.

Are you planning on making this a surprise for her, or can you get her involved? Perhaps you can (like I did) just go with her to some B&M stores to ''look'' at some rings (just for the heck of it, of course) and to ''look'' at different shapes (just for ''fun'').

Listen to what she says, see how she reacts to different shapes, settings, etc., but most importantly, read her eyes! That''ll give you some real pointers.

Then come back here and shop around some of the wonderful diamond vendors.

Very different looks. Apples and oranges. I think you really need to find out what she would prefer.
