It's finally time to get engaged to the person that means the world to me! So, I've slowly spent the past month slowly submerging myself into the world of diamonds. I've learned some, but not near enough

I've browsed through several vendors merchandise and found what I think on paper to be the best diamonds. These are all Emerald Cuts as that is without a doubt what I'm going to get. I've put all the details into a table except carat and price, I'd like to leave those out until I know if there are any duds I should remove.

All feedback is welcome!!! (I mean all!!! I'd like to know what your thinking and why!!)

I should add that I'm looking to narrow it down to maybe 4 diamonds before I start getting into all the high res. pictures. My decision will ultimately be based off my eye.

A lot of information is not available on the grading reports. You cannot judge EC cut from these numbers alone.
The best way is video, followed by multiple images including, ASET, Idealscope, clear head on shots at different tilt angles.

The advice you get on the numbers would be poor speculation at best to just downright guessing.
If you are looking for a top performing EC a vendor who provides video and modern selection methods is key.

as the purchaser and owner of multiple emerald cuts you dont have enough information to judge and you are severely limiting yourself by only including vg to Excell. symmetry and polish. those factors are much less relevant in fancies. some of the auction worlds million dollar Cartier ECs only have good/good. many many stones are out there with varying characteristics. the cut is much more important than the polish being good verses very good. you should find a couple of vendors that specialize in fancies like GOG and have them source one for you. a crown height of 11% to 15% is far more important (and harder to find )than ex polish and symmetry in an EC

Really appreciate the advice everyone and those were the responses I thought I would probably get. I'll be back once I've got some images/videos to toss around and go from there.

Thanks!

Good luck! I agree, you need to see them. On paper people would probably HATE my EC, but I love it. That's all that matters ;))

I don't know, I think number 1 is pretty darn good. I have a three stone ring, all of them are emerald cuts and the center one has the highest clarity (VVS2, with only "pinpoints not shown" noted on the GIA report) and excellent polish/symmetry. It sparkles a lot more than the other 2 which are only VS1 and very good symmetry.

I bought it without seeing it in RL, and I'm thrilled with it.

Emerald cuts are my favorites, and with 3 of them in a solid wall of flashing mirrors on my finger, it's all drama, all the time! :appl:

I have to agree that paper info simply isn't enough information to determine which stone to buy. We bought an ASET scope and worked only with those who would let us use it - or better yet - had their own. That, coupled with your eye can tell you so much more about the stone than statistics. There is an art and science to this stone selection thing.... Good luck - and I can't wait to see the pics!

HI all!
ilander- clearly you have a good eye for stones!
One important point, and relevant to this discussion, is that what you are seeing is not due to the reasons you suspect.
Most likely the center is simply cut more to your liking.
The difference between VS1 and VVS2 is not visible naked eye- nor is the difference between VG and EX on polish and symmetry. These aspects , as described, will not affect the sparkle of an Emerald cut.

I hope you don't mind me pointing this out- these are very common misconceptions.

Alright, so finally got a stone in to be looked at. Problem is, the diamond isn't eye clean :(sad It is a VS2 but just a bad place/color for the occlusion. Either way, I'd like to take some time for the experts to educate me a little on ASET/Idealscope. So let me know what you think about about these:
