Can emerald cut diamond (1 carat each) be appropriate for earrings (hopefuly drop type)? I see many beautiful pear shaped drop type, but do not find many emerald cut earring. People say emerald cut does not spark as much, but how much???
Well, it is not easy to say, but this Q comes up so often that I thought I'd give it this try... There is just one tool that places all diamond shapes on the same scale to measure brilliance: the Cut Adviser.
So... all we need are two examples of stone: a H&A round with top brilliance and an EC with top brilliance among it's peers to make the comparison. How stones compare among their own kind could be determined, say, by looking at Bscope results (not perfect, but without a ton of diamonds to look at and from the wrong side of the screen - what best to do?).
Using such ingredients from the database at good Old Gold, well, see below what results
So, obviously step cut and brilliant cut diamodns look way different - so just adding up amounts of light return is not going to be the definitive test of anything. But since the question is out there, why not...
Thank you, Valeria101.
I do not know how to interpret the data, but emerald cut still sparks enough (very good range in all three categories) for earring...?...
I think the best way for you to figure this out is to go out and look. It's really hard to describe difference in light return, but I've got to say that the difference between comparable ECs and RBs are huge. I love ECs better than any other common shape, but if my main consideration were light return I'd choose another shape. I don't think they're a bad choice for earrings, though; you just have to realize you're going to get nice large flashes of light, but not a lot of sparkle.
