First time poster … By the way, great, GREAT website! Fun, informative and deliciously addictive!!!
So ... I have read a lot over the past few months, learned a lot, and now have some specific questions. I will be buying a diamond ring for my DW, and have narrowed it down as follows:
(a) Shape: Emerald Cut diamond.
(b) Weight: 2.5 carats minimum.
(c) Price: $15K to 20K (of course, the lower the better).
(d) Most important to her: Spread – that is, size as seen from above (length x width).
(e) Least important to her: Color; she says ‘J’ would be fine. I am tempted (not sure why) to go with at least an ‘I’.
(f) Clarity: VS2 minimum. I’m afraid that, given the ‘glassy’ aspect of an emerald cut diamond and the weight (size) I am considering, an SI1, which she says is OK, might not be eye-clean. (Then again, I have seen real SI1 diamonds under 10x and even then, it was hard to find the inclusions sometimes – so I am willing to be flexible on this).
(g) Cut: I’m really not sure how to quantify this, but my ‘gut’ says I want this to be at least ‘Very Good’, with perhaps ‘Good’ as a possibility also. I know that cut is critical in a fancy shape for sparkle and scintillation, but … see (d) above.
(h) Depth % and Table %: high 50s to high 60s.
(i) Certification: GIA or AGS.
---------------------
Here are my questions:
1. Is the above reasonable, or should I change something?
2. What parameters should I use for Symmetry / Polish / Girdle / Fluorescence?
3. Is the length-to-width ratio strictly (within reason) a cosmetic issue with ECs? For most of the ones I have seen so far online or at B&M stores, it is around 1.1 to 1.4, whereas I have read that the ‘preferred’ ratio is between 1.5 and 1.75. My (her) preference seems to gravitate around 1.3.
4. Is there a real difference among the main PS online sellers? I include Blue Nile, White Flash, Good Old Gold, Mondera, JamesAllen and Abazias. [Note: I will not be upgrading later, and a 30-day return policy is, of course, preferable to a 10-day].
5. I saw many postings where people phone the etailer – what for?
6. Are there any other key questions I should be asking?
Thanks for your kind guidance.
