SO and I went to a memorial Mass for his cousin who passed away just after Christmas. Afterwards, his great Uncle invited us to join them for dinner with some of their friends from church. When we settled in our seats at the diner, the uncle got up and announced to the group "This is my grand nephew, ____ and his fiancee______".

One of the ladies says to me, "so you''re really going to marry into this family? Are you sure you''ve thought it through?" Instead of correcting everyone, I just played along with it and said "sure,...only if they''ll agree to keep me"

As we were driving back, SO goes, "well, apparently we''re engaged". I laughed and told him "well, fiancee actually has a nice ring to it"

He didn''t respond.

awww that''s sweet i love being mistaken for engaged! i wouldn''t be embarrassed I''d take it as a good sign!

plus, it''s always nice to see what the BF''s reaction is - he didn''t immediately correct them so he can''t be that opposed to the thought of being engaged

Perhaps Uncle was doing it on purpose!

Great uncles are sneaky like that!

So did you totally drop the subject? Did you discuss anything more?

Your man''s reaction speaks volumes... I wouldnt be surprised if something magical happens soon.

Isnt it awkward when that happens? I never know what to say in those sorts of situations, but it sounds like you handled it well.

I actually often refer to my GF as "my wife", especially in business situations where people tend to show you more respect when you do so - " Hm, I will have to talk to my wife about that" ... she does not seem to mind ... lol.

That happened to me back in ''07 at FF''s cousins'' wedding. FF''s Grandfather introduced me to someone as FF''s fiancé. I immidiately corrected him though and told him we weren''t engaged yet.....no ring on my finger!!!!!! (pointed it out) And FF''s Grandpa said "Well, you PRETTY MUCH are engaged." while FF and I looked at each other....

DreamGirl- That''s funny!

Rob09- I bet she''s quite flattered by it :)

tlh - you may be right. He has been hinting a lot recently and the past week or so he''s been extra quiet and reflective (perhaps from work), but he has a surprise planned for me this weekend... Keeping my fingers crossed!

I would not worry about your BF''s silence after you said it had a nice ring to it. That seems like something my BF would''ve done. I think when SOs don''t want to give away too much info or it seems like the surprise is being threatened, they just stop talking about it. Maybe the uncle has some inside info too. :)

awww....that''s a cute story!...and you both handled it really well!

yesterday at my BF''s belated family christmas, one of his aunts came up to me and asked "soo...any heavier fingers? icy fingers??"

I pretty much had the same thing happen to me. Granted, I KNEW he was going to propose soon, but didn''t know when. After I was announced to a LARGE group of people as his fiance, when I was not, I was proposed to the next day. He didn''t want to get questioned by a ton of people and tell them we weren''t engaged and then have to tell them we were a few weeks later.

You never know!!!! Maybe you''ll get your proposal soon.
