In the comments section of a EGL report reads:

-DUPLICATE

what does that comment mean?

it means the manufature still owns the diamond and if/when you purchase the stone you will then receive thee original report.

ok, thanks.

It means that they graded the stone at some time in the past and the report got lost or damaged. They issued a new duplicate report at the request of some client (who may or may not be the original client) based on the data they had but without a new inspection of the stone. You'll occasionally see 'duplicate' GIA's as well.

Denver Appraiser's response is better than mine. I was going to say that EGL meant Run Forrest, Run...

Wink - Is that EGL USA or all EGL?

interesting- but if it's older and a used stone could the grading be off potentially from any damage incurred?

That would be a potential issue whether the cert was duplicate or not, if the report is older.

Is a duplicate EGL report as worthless as the original?

Bryan, in all honesty, I am not fond of EGL paper, no matter where it is from, but EGL USA is probably miles ahead of some of the out of country labs like EGL Israel.

Labs vary from country to country and it is hard to maintain consistency, especially when some labs are just cashing in on abusing the supposed mirroring of the GIA grading system.

I am told on great authority, John Pollard, that IGI in China is one of the top labs there. Not only that, but that they deserve to be because of the quality of their work. John has been a speaker in China two or three times now and is very highly regarded there, just as he is here on Pricescope.

My comment last night was out of line in a serious conversation, I apologize if I offended anyone who is not with EGL.

This is exactly why when any of the vendors here do a buy back that before the buy back is actually completed, a new report is issued. This protects both the seller, the vendor and also the future client from unseen damage getting passed on.

that's exactly what I thought :)

Lab reports can ONLY describe what the lab saw as of the date of inspection. Yes, it's possible to have damage that occured since that date and the odds of it go up dramatically if the stone's been sold, worn and returned. The 'duplicate' just refers to the piece of paper and that has no affect on the stone. The stone will have the same wear (or not) regardless of whether they have the original report or a duplicate and the printed date will be the date of inspection, not the date of printing. That said, dealers hate duplicate reports because it's a flag that the stone has been sold and returned and you're right to be nervous about it. In private party sales like craigslist and ebay, they're fairly common. The seller gets the report number off of the girdle inscription or a prior appraisal but they don't have the original report for whatever reason and don't want to take the time and spend the money to send it in again. This significantly increases the risk of a mismatch between the stone and the report and it should definitely make you nervous here as well but the fact that it's a private party sale means you already should be getting it appraised by your own expert so it's not really all that big a deal. You're not actually relying on the report anyway. (note: In the case of EGL, I wouldn't recommend you rely on the report under any circumstances for other reasons but this discussion about duplicate paper applies to GIA, IGI and many other labs as well)
