Hello,

My partner and I are purchasing a yellow sapphire for my engagement ring. As most of the budget is going to the stone I was looking at semi mounts on ebay and was wondering what people think of their quality and if you would use it as an engagement ring. I could always get a simple setting and save up for the halo setting that I want. However, I am impatient and found this setting that I love. My only concern is that I don't want it to look cheap and was wondering if anyone has used them as their engagement ring?

The setting that I really like is http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130455654352&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Thank you in advance for your comments and opinions.

Cheers,
Heidi

I haven't bought from that vendor, but I would hesitate at using an ebay setting for an engagement ring. Not that I'm particularly biased towards ebay settings - I have quite a few for my gemstone rings, and I love them for what they are - a decent setting for a great price for a not particularly expensive stone.

I would much rather get a simple stock setting from a reputable vendor (BGD, WF, etc.) for now, and save up for a reset down the line.

I have 2 semi mounts from them that I use with my colored stones. I personally wouldn't do it for an engagement ring. They do look cheap and i would worry about how they hold up. You would need to upgrade the stones and gold for it to look nicer. I bet you can find a better semi mount somewhere else for a little bit more.

Stuller and Adwar and Unique Settings of NY. Any jeweler can get them in for you and they will be better quality and be able to handle daily wear. The only settings I'd get off ebay for an engagement ring are some of the vintage, pre-owned platinum ones. But they are costly too, because they are well made and platinum.

Thank you very much for your replies. I have book marked the companies listed and have taken a look. I assume I go through my jeweler in order to get pricing. I have seen quite a few nice settings with pave on the band which is the look I am going for. As our budget did go towards the stone I am going to plan to change out the setting in a couple of years. Who knows maybe I will have changed my mind again by then :twirl:

Thanks again,
Heidi
