For Christmas, my fiance bought me a pair of diamond studs on Ebay (I thought Lord Have Mercy) with the ability to return them. They were listed as "matched, full cut, fully facted round European cut with modern brilliance and fire, 1.00 tcw, H-I color, SI2 clarity with no visible flaws, bright white and fiery, brilliance and sparkle, polished to absolutely new condition" in platinum screwbacks for $900. Very nice Christmas surprise!
And they are absolutely gorgeous. Great sparkle. Lovely. Really a wonderful size, too. But - were they even real? How could I tell? The price seemed too good to be true.
I took them to one of the independent appraisers I found through Pricescope, Vincent Lash, in Churchville, MD.
He found them to be different.
"Threaded post stud earrings with 2 old-European-cut diamonds circa 1900 in modern setting, (4.64 x 4.47 x 3.10 - 4.51 x 4.46 x 3.0 mm - 0.80 carat the pair - one is I1 clarity J color - one is SI1 clarity - G color" Retail value $2,500 for the pair."
Fascinating. They are .20 carats less than advertised, different sizes and unmatched. They are worth almost three times what he paid and I love them. On my ears, you can''t tell they are different in size or color, of course. And I''m keeping them.
This experience, combined with my ring experience, has made me a big believer in getting diamonds appraised by an independent appraiser who does not sell diamonds.
BTW, ID Jewelry was extraordinarily gracious about letting me return the .62 tcw diamond studs I had just bought myself, not realizing my fiance was going to buy me these for Christmas. And it is amazing how much bigger-appearing-on-the-ear .80 tcw is than .62 tcw.
