E-ring help! What do you think of this halo / bezel setting?

Hey PS'ers!

Long time lurker here. The boyfriend and I went to look at rings today. We decided that he will do the research on rocks and I will research the settings! So I wanted to get your opinion.

We went to Tiffany's (not planning to buy from B&M obviously, just to look). I went in with dreams of cushions, but my favorites ended up being the halo (style is called the Embrace) and the Lucida with cathedral setting. Pics above.

What I liked about the halo was that it made the ring look huge! But I wasn't a fan of the light return of the micropave - too blingy. It changed the light return of the ring to have tiny white pinpoints around the edge, whereas I preferred the large flashes of light from a simple solitaire by itself. But overall still liked the halo because it made the center stone look huge. I liked the Lucida because of the simple, sleek modern look.

After some research on James Allen, I think I like the setting in the 1st pic. Link here: http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/-18k-White-Gold-Pave-Set-Diamond-Engagement-Ring-17155w14.html It has the halo, yet fewer pave diamonds than the Tiffany halo so maybe I could get the huge look without the micropave light return? Also has the sleek lines of the Lucida. What do you guys think?

Center stone will likely be in the 1.5ct range.

Reservations:
1. One reason that I liked the Tiffany halo was that the halo diamonds were small and blended seamlessly into the center stone instead of competing with it. Not sure whether this will have the same effect since I didn't see it in person.
2. This setting seems to be half bezel half halo. I've heard that bezels can block off light from the sides and make the center stone less sparkly. Is this true?

Any other settings I should consider? Suggestions welcome!

Thank you!!

I think the James Allen halo is okay if you are buying your diamond there. There are certainly better and worse quality halos. I do like the plain shank a lot.

No, it is not true that a bezel will hurt the light return of a well cut diamond because light is reflected out of the top of the stone. That setting is a halo and not a bezel setting, though.

You really need to direct your boyfriend here to be sure he gets a good diamond! We could tell you lots of disaster stories that could have been avoided if they guys had come here to do the diamond research! We know you want a round, so he needs to come tell us a budget and we can recommend some ideal and excellent cut stones within that budget. If you definitely decide on that setting, we would help him find a diamond at James Allen. If not, you might want to look at Gabriel and Co. because they have many, many halo settings and Good Old Gold carries that line.

It you aren't sure about the blingyness of a halo but love the big effect you could go with a bezel setting.

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagemen...aire-engagement-ring-round-center-17247w.html modern,sleek and elegant.

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/reveal-single-stone-reset-lots-of-pics.179152/ not a bezel but similar idea with a whole lot more va va voom! I love this ring

I totally second diamondseeker about sending your bf here to get his blingducation (see what I did there ;) ) No but seriously a well cut center stone, IMO and probably most other PSer's, is the absolute key to a beautiful ring. Yes the setting is important but a poorly cut stone in an amazing setting is just disappointing.

Thanks for the replies!! Yes, I have sent the bf here. He's been lurking and educating himself...

I've realized that the halo might be too blingy. What do you think of this setting instead? Do you think the silver band would blend nicely into the diamond or would it look weird? I kind of like the modern look but am afraid it may be too edgy!

I am SHOCKED that I like that setting, but I do. I am a classic solitaire girl myself, and you seem to be drawn to the classic styles (x-prong, halo w/plain shank, bezel) so I'd stick with those. I understand your concern about the halo, but I don't think ANYTHING can be 'too blingy.' :naughty: If you love it, you love it, and I think a halo with a plain shank is a great way to get a bit more bling and finger coverage, while also not being 'over the top' (plus some folks don't like diamonds between their fingers), and it gives you the option of wearing multiple different wedding bands. Here's a thread I started of halos with plain shanks: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/show-me-halos-with-plain-shanks.157864/

To muddy the waters a bit more :cheeky: what about this one?

Kind of swoopy like a trellis, but a classic profile, and a bit of a 'twist.'
