Thanks for the previous help.
I am down to two diamonds:
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4245/
and
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4276/

Both have been verified as eye clean. The price different is not significant enough to make a difference. Is the difference only the clarity?

and two settings:
http://www.goodoldgold.com/setting/S-140401H/
or
http://www.goodoldgold.com/setting/S-15620603/

Thanks!

Hi dgres,

Both stones would be lovely. Splitting hairs though, I'd pick the VS2.

Of your settings, I like the head on view of the Tiffany style, but I admit I'm not loving the profile so much. I like the one view of the other, but it's hard to say without a profile view. Sorry I can't be more help.

Thanks for the response. Perhaps I should have linked better.

Here is a profile view of the second: its on the right.

I was leaning towards the vs2 stone as well. The second link

VS1
sl. thick girdle
$1700
VS2
med girdle
$1500

I really like Whiteflash''s setting:

Do you think the GOG will set the diamond in a setting from somewhere else?

Thanks-
David

I like the WF setting much better.

GOG will often use a setting they didn't sell. Just email Marie and ask if they will. I would imagine it won't be a problem, it's not a complicated setting.

Thanks again,

yes they said they''d set it for me. Now another question. Whats the difference between 18k gold versus 14k gold? I know 18k is more pure. Is it worth the premium, any issues with durability?

Or should I just go platinum in the first place and at $600, it''s not a bank breaker.

Do you know if she prefers Plat over gold? Most finer jewelry is made in 18k, but is it that much better? I honestly don''t know. I have an heirloom setting that is 14k, and it''s held up extremely well for being close to 100 years old.

How much do they charge to set their diamond with the ring from others?

They charge $100 / carat to set stones in settings that are not theirs. But WF does not sell the setting i want alone.. So back to square one.
Anyone know anyplace else that has a nice tiffany style setting?

Thanks!

Oh, my. That WF setting is the most common tiffany style setting (I have one like it that is 30 years old!), so I can assure you that GOG can get it for you!!!! It is probably Stuller, but send them the picture and ask them to get it for you!!! That would be crazy to buy that setting somewhere else and pay GOG to set your stone!

But if you can spend a little more, I saw this Vatche Caroline setting and think it is SO pretty!!! (And GOG carries Vatche)

Ohhh DS that setting is beautiful :)

Second vote for that one if the budget allows :)

Oooh, I also really like that Vatche setting.

Thanks for the help. I think that setting would work as well. The stuller setting is posted above. It is not the same as WF. I''ll find out how much the setting you posted will cost.

Thanks

I really love the Vatche setting. It''s gorgeous.

Do you think that the setting is small enough for the smaller stones I picked out? .5c?

Thanks-

YIKES! I think I made a mistake. instead of going with the gog stones, I ended up with a stone from JA

It is supposedly a AGS ideal 0, but when I plug it into the HCA it comes back as 0.5, is that still considered AGS 0?!

here are the specs
depth
60.2%
56.2%
34°
40.6°
thn-med
cutlet: no
id
id
neg

verified as eye clean.

IS THIS AGS IDEAL? 0? YIKES!

the score from HCA does not determine whether is an AGS0 stone. I got a stone from GOG with AGS0 cert and scores 1.0 in HCA

0.5 and 1.0 are quite a bit different from my understanding.

However, here is the stone I ended up with:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-981045.asp?b=16&a=12&c=77&cid=131

I figure I can return it if it doesn''t seem very nice.

I came across a thread in PS shows cut comparing between a stone which had a 0.2 scores in HCA with a stone with a score of 1<x<2. the result shows that the one with 0.2 has a poorer cut than the one with 1<x<2.

As other people had mention HCA just to narrow down the choice of the stone.

So are you saying that the 0.5 cut stone may be poor?

eerrr.......in order to determine whether the diamond has a good cut, usually people don't only depend on one tools e.g. HCA but also some other tools and analysis reports.

But from the IS image, it looks nice.

Not necessarily. It''s an AGS0, and has a great IS pic. Have an independant appraiser take a look at it when it gets to you, they can best assess the stone and let you know if there are any problems.

Thanks Ellen. I''ll do that. The purchase what somewhat spur of the moment -- perhaps I shouldn''t have done that after doing research for greater than a good month. One of my original two choices sold today, so I figured it was time. The issue with the GOG was the haziness on the heart photo combined with the lack of a good tiffany setting. In addition, the cost associated with return if the diamond was not to par.

I''ll post pictures when I get them.

I''d love to see it, and you''re welcome!
