So, I have to share with fellow jewelry lovers. My family would just tell me I'm nuts.

A few minutes ago, I decided to fix a seam in my favorite hoodie, which I've owned for a year now. I pulled out my "sewing kit" which is a basket with a hinged lid, that was overflowing with stuff. First I pulled out the white thread and needle, and did the job. Then I decided to just dump the basket and clean/condense the stuff inside. You know: buttons, ribbon, thread, pins, needles, etc. I did that, as I was condensing the boxes with the needles, I found something that's been missing for a year and a half. My diamond necklace!!!! It's precious to me, not only because it's a sparkly, but the stone came from my mom's ering. We lost mom with was 13, and eventually her ring, came to me and I reset it about 18 years ago.

This is the third time I've hidden/lost jewelry and found it months later. Why I would have put this in a box of needles, I have no idea. Doesn't seem like a good idea now. I have to get over this fear of being robbed (we've never been, knock on wood, but I know others who have been, though not recently, thank goodness.)

In the meantime, yay! I reset my studs into bezel settings just a couple months ago, so now they 'match' except that the necklace is yg, and the earrings are wg. Any one know how long it would take for a jeweler to rhodium place a necklace?

Awwww, that's great KaeKae!

It sounds like something that only happens in my dreams - where I dream about find lost things in weird places. So wonderful to find something you're not actively looking for!

That's really good news!!! Now stop hiding jewelry!!!

KaeKae, I am so happy for you! How precious it must have been to realize what you had found! Thank you for sharing with us. :wavey:

What a great story! I'm so glad you found it.

Yay, that's great that you found your necklace! :appl:

With rhodium plating, the necklace may have to be sent out, so your best best would be to call around and see what various jewelers offer in regards to time/price.

Thanks everyone, I knew my friends at PS would understand.

Tyty, I definitely have to stop hiding. I have a bit of a phobia. We've never been robbed, but I've known others who have, and it sticks in my mind, even though I do have a large, loud, vocal dog. (I'm told that's the best prevention of a break in, but still...) I think wearing it may be the safest route :twirl:

MC, I didn't think about the fact that a jeweler might have to send it out. I'll give the local jeweler a call in the morning. I know he does a lot of his own work (made my reset four years ago) so hopefully it's in house, but I have a feeling I'll be without it a week or so, which would be okay, but I'm going away next week, and would like to take it with me. Maybe I'll just be wearing yg this trip, except for the wedding set.

Yeah, it depends if your jeweler has the equipment or needs to order anything. I had a local jeweler reset stones and he had to order the settings so it still took a week.

That's wonderful KaeKae!!! :appl: So happy for you!

Have you considered getting a home safe so you could keep your valuables there? We have one that is bolted to the wall and all my jewelry is in one place. Though I will admit to misplacing it in the safe at times and not being able to easily find certain pieces lol. Anyway so glad you found that very sentimental piece!!!

That's awesome KaeKae!! I second Missy's idea of a home safe....give you some peace of mind.

Wow, the Gods of Lost Things are on your side! Congratulations -- and yeah, get a safe to save your sanity. It's a neat necklace, love the tie to your mother. Good job!!

P.S. My mother would say, "See the rewards for cleaning things out?" :knockout:

I am so glad you found it KaeKae! I have a piece missing that I have no idea where it is too. I would be so happy to find it! I know how you feel about worrying about theft. I feel the same. My jewelry box is bolted to a wall, has a key that I keep in the safe, and my walk in closet has a big heavy door with a coded deadbolt on it. It is not a absolute, but it would sure take some time to get through all of it. Plus our house is alarmed. I walked in on a burglary once and it was kind of scary. The guy escaped out a back window. I have grown much more cautious since then.

Thanks for the support, sparkle friends!

I have been thinking about a safe. When I mentioned it in the past, DH said two things: 1) but we have a safe deposit box at the bank for free and 2) couldn't a robber just walk off with a safe? While both are true, the box at the bank is not convenient, I can't just run over there on say, a Thursday morning while getting dressed, to pick out my necklace. And, technically, a safe could be removed, but if bolted to the floor or wall, it's less likely than my jewelry box being carried out, right?

Jewelfreak: I can hear in my head, your mother and mine, saying just that! I wonder what I might find in the junk drawers in the kitchen??? Maybe the safe deposit box key? :wink2:

luv2sparkle: lesson learned, you'll find it in a crazy place for sure!

Okay, it must be my lucky day (24 hour period?) I just found the safe deposit key. If I want, I can put this necklace away while we are on vacation AND I can see grandma's ering, along with a couple other items, which have been in the box for months as well. (but I did know where they were.) So, no hiding and keep the box key in an obvious place!

eta: it wasn't in the junk drawer, but it was in the kitchen, not far from that drawer :o

Ha, not trying to beat a dead horse here, but I happened to see this story today. This is the kind of thing I had feared since realizing I didn't know where I'd stashed the necklace.

Rather than doing a garage sale, we donate. Let me tell you, I've never examined pockets so well as I have for the last year. I did find $10 in one pair of pants. :$$):
