Greetings all -

Yesterday I went up to JA''s Frederick office to view two diamonds (side note: thank you to Jim for lending me his time and expertise - the experience was well worth it - I highly recommend viewing prospective stones in person if at all feasible) and both were superior; I''d be very happy with either stone. But, I can''t have both. So, in an effort to aid in my decisionmaking, I''d like to hear what experienced diamond owners think about the two stones.

Assume for this thread that the diamonds possess equally superior fire, scintillation and brilliance. The descriptions are based on my perceptions and experience from yesterday.

Diamond 1: ~$20k, 2.11 ct., excellent H
Diamond 2: ~$22k, 2.37 ct., weaker H

It comes down to size versus price and color. I know that, at the end of the day, for better or worse, size really does matter; my GF''s friends won''t be asking to see the ring''s idealscope, but they will want to know the size. But, is that very small (but still perceptable to me) size increase worth an extra two grand and a very small (but again, still perceptable) increase in color?

I''ve been at this for months. I''ve finally got it down to two stones. I fully realize the microscopic size of the nits I''m picking at this point. But, it''s the biggest purchase of my life so far, and I want it to be as close to perfect as I can get. So, I yield the floor to the pros. Thank you all!

I would go for the smaller diamond. You still get the "over 2 carat" bragging right, and a size difference that will not be noticeable once set in a ring. Put the money saved towards the setting, or something else!

I find myself in agreement with Ellen.

Thritto

Quadtto.

I also vote diamond one. Good luck!

Thank you all for your opinions. Keep them coming!

I forgot to mention in the initial post another question I have: is the security of the stone in a four-prong setting an issue with stones of this size? My GF has expressed a preference for four-prong, but the last thing I want is to have the stone break out of the setting. Would six-prong be the way to go here, or can I feel confident about a four-prong setting?

I have read from many of the experts here that if well made, a 4 prong setting would be fine. However, not all agree, and you may get some conflicting opinions.

I would get her what she prefers, and just make sure you get a good setting, buy a loupe, check the prongs once a month yourself, and have an experienced jeweler check them every 6 months. Do that, and I think you''ll be just fine.
