do you wear expensive clothes along with your expensive jewelry?

I'll play, DF!

My taste in clothes has varied greatly over the years, from designer suits, dresses in my twenties to mostly jeans, spaghetti tops in my thirties (except from when I was at work - which would mean dark suits and formal dresses again) back now to a fairly dressed-up look in my forties. I mix and match designer pieces with non-designer. Mostly, I think I'm well-dressed and my tailored (look) clothes match my bling - slightly upscale, elegant but not OTT, at least I don't think they are! :wink2:

Nope lol

... sort of? But it's a similarity of kind and not degree - I buy a lot of vintage clothing, just like I buy vintage jewelry. But even accounting for proportional differences, my clothing is less expensive ... let's say my clothing is more in the bohemia-garnet category of pricing than it is the diamond category of pricing.

Style-wise, though, it's very much the same. I like an idiosyncratic blend of old and new styles - fishtail prongs next to chunky bezels, a pair of cherry-red Doc-Marten-style Chloe boots with a New Lookish LBD.

Sometimes...I like to look sophisticated and sharp even during my down time (albeit more funky than during the workweek) but I spend much less on clothing than I do jewelry. However I find it easier to get deals on great clothes whereas with diamonds and other fine jewelry you sort of do get what you pay for (for the most part). So I think if you know me/see me you would say yes it all goes together quite well (I hope at least) but you would not know what a bargain I got re the clothes on my back. :))

Hmm, I'd say my wardrobe matches my jewelry - I wear jeans and sweaters these days (not working, helping out with elderly mom during the week) and as much as I love diamonds I don't have many and the ones I have are fairly small in size - I end up wearing studs and my wedding set most days, and a rhr and a pendant for the rare occasions when I get dolled up - so yeah, both my jewelry and wardrobe are pretty basic and low-key.

Define expensive? I own jeans that were over $100 a whack, though that's not a common pricepoint for me.

I buy stuff at Nordstrom and Target, mostly. But I would not say I am at all a fashionista. I wear jeans or cargos with some kind of tshirt/cami/cardigan combo on top almost daily. A uniform even.

Nope. I'm addicted to buying too much of cheap clothing. I have an extensive wardrobe, because I like playing with different looks often. Only on things like undergarments or shoes, do I pay for quality rather than quantity, since they go through more wears. I never spend more than $30 on a top, and maybe the highest I've paid for pants were $50-70 from Express? I love Ross, TJ Maxx, and Forever 21. :)

But I don't exactly have an extensive fine jewelry collection yet, either..

While my jewelry is definitely more expensive than my clothing, I'd say I have a pretty classic/understated style for both. Most of my clothes are from Gap, Old Navy, and Target. I have a few nicer things from J.Crew, but anything over $100 for an article of clothing seems pretty steep to me, unless it's a special piece (like a suit jacket or a dress to wear to a more formal occasion). My 'nice' jewelry consists of a pair of pearl earrings and pendant, my .55 e-ring, plain 2mm w-band, WF bezel band, a few stackers I got from DB, my spinel/jewelryhoo RHR, and my bezel studs, also from DB.

Style-wise, I feel it matches. My wardrobe tends to be simple in terms of color and shape. My jewelry generally has clean lines, too. Price-wise, my jewelry is of higher value than my clothing. In some ways, I use my jewelry to make it appear my wardrobe is of better quality than it really is.

Probably not.

I'm just a casual person and can wear casual type clothes for my job. I'm happy in (quality) jeans or dress pants and tailored shirts/jackets/sweaters. In the summer, I'm mainly in skirts or dresses. I love shoes! But I think my jewellry (which will last longer and wear better!) probably laughs at my clothes and taunts each piece with "she likes me BETTER"! :D

At least I'm dressed.... :wink2:

I embarass my jewelry every time I get dressed.

Seriously, I'm still unemployed have have taken to wearing the much dreaded velour track suit during the week--it's way more comfortable than jeans.{horrors} But I do make an effort when we go out and I do have {a lot of} very nice clothes that haven't seen the light of day since June 08--blazers and sweaters and pretty silk blouses.

My SO buys all of my clothes from the thrift store, except shoes and underwear which must be new.

I don't think anything I own cost over five bucks.
My diamonds cost more than five bucks.

I view my jewelry as very similar to my wardrobe in terms of sustainability. These days I mainly buy items of clothing that are going to stand the test of time and not only function (serve a purpose beyond modesty) but also fit correctly and have classic styling so that I do not have to continually replace them--just like my jewelry. Obviously I do have a few "fun" pieces of costume jewelry, and my wardrobe reflects that as well--I have some shoes that are just for looks, and some trendy pieces that are just for fun. For the most part, though, I am "buy nice don't buy twice." My concern is with lifetime mileage, not initial investment. However there is plenty of affordable RTW out there that is very well constructed and with the correct tailoring will last forever!

I think I manage to look put together and refined most of the time. However, I don't buy my clothes at fancy department stores. I shop at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Kohl's, Gap, Target, etc. My style is pretty classic, with the accessories to provide a bit of flair. I think my jewlery is pretty much the same. My fine jewlery pieces are pretty classic and I stick with costume jewelry for the more trendy stuff.

I don't consider my wardrobe to be expensive for New Zealand - not designer, just kind of mid market (Jeans $100-$160, Dresses $200ish, shoes up to $300 etc) BUT clothing in New Zealand is VERY expensive compared to the same quality in the US, so the same clothing would probably be half this price or less in the States.

I'm not sure. I'd say yes, it matches. Most days I wear a wedding band or possibly a vintage ring with diamond, and either silver dangle earrings or diamond studs. So pretty simple. Today I'm in black cords, black sweatshirt, and trainers. My wardrobe, both clothes and jewelery, is laid back and non-fussy. Diamonds do go with t-shirts and jeans, right?

At one time, my designer duds matched my lovely jewellery, but times change, people and their lifestyles change so now that I'm retired I don't need to 'dress up' as I used to. Right now, my jewellery is worth much more than any outfits I own.

Nope, I mix and match everything. Today I went out to lunch & a movie and wore my designer jeans with my bezel diamond pendant. This summer I'll wear Old Navy shorts at the park with that same pendant!

It's not about price, it's about what looks good together!

Yes, my outfits and my jewelry match in terms of look and style - but my jewelry is far more expensive than my clothing - my wardrobe is basically monochromatic - all the color is in the jewels.

I'm with you here Kenny, though I buy it from the thrift store myself. (Except shoes and underwear which must be new).
My clothing is always of very high quality, though, even if its not expensive. (I wouldn't say I own nothing which cost more than five bucks but the majority of my clothing cost under that). I sew so I know how to recognize quality clothing made out of fine materials with good worksmanship, which ends up at the thrift store a LOT. Labels mean nothing to me, but I know everything about bound buttonholes, properly lined skirts and jackets and high end fabric, as well as what proper fit is. It is fit that makes clothes look truly expensive. I have been known to buy a $4 100% cotton shirt on sale at Walmart, sew darts on it so that it fits properly and have people think I spent a bundle on it, when I pair with a great wool crepe skirt bought at thrift store.
Especially when it is accessorized with a diamond pendant or a beautiful pearl necklace, and a good handbag (bought on sale of course) and good shoes.

Not at all.

My jewellery is far more expensive than my clothes. Sometimes I do wonder...jeans, wool sweaters and Blundstones with diamonds and pearls? Works for me though.

I'd rather wear fewer, better quality pieces and indulge my passion for bling than have a ton of clothes. Mind you, I'd like to be able to afford both

I think so, but not the way you framed it.

My jewelry is great quality, but all my pieces are a great value. The only branded pieces I have I got on sale or preowned, and the rest of my pieces are great quality but not branded. Of course, there is a 'splurge' item in there, but you have to have one of those, IMO. That's pretty much my wardrobe in a nutshell too. Branded pieces were on sale, most pieces are not branded and occasionally there are some splurges to keep life interesting.

Er no.

I have a few good pieces (vivienne Westwood, DvF etc) but the vast amount is from the high street.

I have nice shoes and bags though. But when I look at anything over £1000, I think "hmm, I could put that towards bling instead" and walk away :cheeky:

LOL I do the same Rosetta...it must be a PS illness as whenever I see something I want to purchase and it is over a certain amount I think hmmmmm What could I get with that money in jewels! :cheeky:
That's really hurting right now as we are planning to redo our bulkhead and that's a major chunk of change and all I can think of are all the jewels I could have purchased with that money... ::)

Not at all. I don't care much about clothes. Not that I dress trashy or poorly, but Labels don't impress me.

I wear scrubs and very little jewelry for my job as a nurse.

The rest of my clothing is more what flatters my figure and suits my fairly casual lifestyle. I'm not that concerned with brands and I try to shop sales. I have a fairly modern classic style but I do like a few trends.

I prefer to think that my jewelery matches my wardrobe - for the beach I would wear jeans, a t-shirt and a wedding band. For dinner out I would probably go for a dress or something smart with e-ring, w band, rhr and drop earrings. Most of us have more than one 'wardrobe' that ranges from cheaper, harder wearing items to higher end pieces for lighter wear.

While my jewelry isn't nearly as nice as a lot of PSers', I do think that proportionally, it is slightly above what I spend on clothes. Today I'm wearing:

Black sweater from J.C. Penney -- on sale for $9 (new)
Black & gray flared tweed skirt from H&M -- probably $35 (~8 years old)
Black Cole Haan pumps -- ~$200 (1 year old)
Black Sag Harbor purse from J.C. Penny -- ~$50 (~1 year old)

Wedding set with .31 fancy-brownish pink diamond & two half eternities -- (needs to be reappraised) probably ~$6,000
RHR set with .5 marquise tanzinite -- ~$800
Diamond circle earrings TCW unknown -- ~$200
.25 TCW diamond solitaire/halo pendant -- ~$500

That's pretty typical, except I'm usually wearing trousers or jeans instead of a skirt
