"according to the basic rules,if you live in a $500k home..

you can drive a car = to 14% of your home value.
you can wear an E-ring = to 7% of your home value.

Who made up these ''basic rules,'' DF?

Well I live in an apartment, so how does that affect my car and e-ring allowances? Do I not get to have a car and e-ring because I don''t have a mortgage, and therefore no ''home value?''

To answer your question... actually, I have no idea how to answer such a question, so I won''t even try!!

heyellyeah baby. I live in a ghetto apartment, have a ride with a stereo that''s worth more than the wheelz, and got me some bling grillz.

Oh for heavens sakes you have been throwing out these rules for as long as I have been on PS. Don't they ever change??

I am sorry, but that is the stupidest rule I have heard today. That kind of thinking (if even valid) is what gets people in financial trouble and have debt up their aXX.

My car and ering do not cost anywhere near that % of my home value. But of course I live in SoCA...

LOLZ

;)

According to those standards .. no.

My ring is about .. uh no where close to that 7% (I wish), and my car is about half of the 14%

That would make my car worth £35,000 and my e ring £17,500 - not a chance on earth, they seem to be totally unrealisitic percentages to me. My ring cost around 1% of the cost of our home and my car is now worth about the same on a good day!

LOL! Yep, DF's ' rules' are legendary. Remember the ones about what carat size you can wear according to your finger size or something K ???

Yes here we are - DancingFire's Basic Rules 101

No...

as in, I don''t have a car! but I do have some jewelery

I think so. We live a modest life and I think I have a modest collection of jewelry.

Ahahaha! Fo shizzle!

My e-ring does not match my house, because I don''t have one, and I live with my parents. (This was even when my diamond was real.) I remember when we first bought the Crossfire, which we no longer have, how happy I was that my e-ring now matched my car. Lol.

My car and jewelry probably don''t match my house. We live in a modest home and made the decision a long time ago to stay in our modest home just so that we could have all the "toys" that we wanted. It''s worked well for us, house is paid off and we can play. DF, where do you come up with these things???

According to your rules my rings dont match up to my house...but according to MY rules they are consistent!

(I never believed that one about your ring should cost 2X your monthy income either...would be nice but that
just sounds out of line to me)

Yes.

I think so.

My ring (which I do not currently possess, as I''m not engaged yet) was inherited, so its significantly nicer than anything we could ever afford in the near future.

Our apartment is a craphole.

My car is decent.

I don''t wear jewelry, really. Once I get my e-ring, that''ll be the only thing I wear.

I don''t really know how to answer this either.

I don''t own anything but a car. FI owns a home. Based on his income, my ring is appropriate. Based on my income, it''s not. But I didn''t pay for it, so it doesn''t matter.

Nope. I live in a nice house in a respected neighborhood. My ring is modest. I would always choose things to be that way! My car is right down the middle.

Nope.

I would say my jewelry matches my apartment (don''t own a home) but does not match my car. We''re not car people and just don''t get spending a ton of money on something that depreciates in value so quickly.

Nope.

DH and I live with his parents since we''re saving for a house. We both have decent cars though - mine is a 2005 and his is a 1995 or older. Ering is a .84/K/SI1 H&A.

Yup. My ring and my car are both BLUE and my ring and my house are both vintage style.
