I was looking at my fiancees ring, it''s a Supercert Tiffany with an 1.3c H&A stone that scored a HCA of 0.9. It got EX,EX,EX,VG for the spread. It is very beautiful and sparkly.

Her friend came over who has a true Tiffany''s solitaire 1.4c which is also beautiful. However when they place the rings next to each other I noticed that my fiancees 1.3 ring faced up larger than the 1.4 Tiffany. It was quite noticeable!!!!

Also looking at the prongs you could tell that the Superbcert one was more flared like a basket and the Tiffany was more upright, still a basket shape. The friend didn''t know the size of my fiancees ring but she automatically looked at the bottom of the diamond, probably to see if it was shallow. Her friend could see that the diamond looked fat because of the shape of the prongs. By the way there is a little difference between the Tiffany vs the Superbcert Tiffany and it is the tip of the prongs. The Tiffany is squarish is shape and Superbcert are like little teardrops. I like the Superbcerts Tiffany better.

So this made me wonder if Tiffany likes Deeper and steeper stones. I know my diamond isn''t a badly cut stone that is shallow so it faces up bigger because it is only 6.98mm for a 1.3c which is an OK size. Anyone know if Tiffany has a preference for the type of stones they use?

were they equally bright and sparkley? or did one outshine the other? be honest! lol ;)

there is just no way to generalize such things. every diamond is going to be different and may have certain characteristics that would change the percieved size. any diamond could face up smaller or bigger for it''s carat weight, just because one has a brand attached doesn''t mean you can make generalizations about it.
enjoy your ring!

I know that Tiffany has very exacting standards for the cut of their diamonds, you are very unlikely to find a dud among them. You really can't compare the two or where they came from, but it is entirely possible your diamond faces up larger than a diamond of 10 points heavier, for a number of reasons. You would need details of both stones to even begin to tell the differences of where weight might hide or display itself.

CehraBehra, the diamonds were both sparkly, although my fiancees ring was a little bit more but that may be due to the fact we got a Sharper Image Ultrasonic cleaner which she uses weekly.

The whiteness of the H&A seemed to be a little more whiter than the Tiffany''s. I have nothing against it but was just wondering where the extra 10 points were. Does Tiffany''s do 60/60?

I have seen my sisters 1.21c diamond which faces up as large as my fiancees. Under spotlighting I can''t really see a difference in the sparkliness however the whiteness my fiancees was alot more white!.

I am just trying to look at different types of diamonds and seeing if I can see what the education sites say such as a shallow diamond has a fish eye effect, etc

Take your ideal-scopes in and you will find there are plenty of steep deep leaky Tiffany diamonds.

lol I would love to see the looks on the Tiffany faces when you pull out your ideal-scope at the counter.

I wanted to see their Lucida next to my Regent. They had to take me in the back room because it was over a certain $$ amount, I think. I put their ring next to mine and mine looked way bigger and sparklier (even dirty). I was shocked to find out that it was almost the exact same size (weight).

Does and should Tiffany have some sort of force control over you?

I have often found it strange that people should be fearful of "big brands"

If their brand does have value then they should welcome independant confirmation of the quality of their products - but I bet 90% of you are not game to test them out.

I have and many big names rate a so so on their large diamond cut quality

Well hold on a second there, Hoss. What I meant was, I would love to see what I imagine would be "pretentious socialite horror" on the faces of the clerks at Tiffany.

That wasn't me being fearful of big brands or fearful of what would happen to me if I pulled out an ideal-scope at Tiffany. That was me enjoying the looks on their faces for what I imagine would be the first time they saw an ideal-scope.

LOL. I don't think you'd see the pretentious socialite horror you'd imagine there. Most Tiffany & Co. salespeple are genuine, warm & helpful. We were even invited to the funeral of the gentleman who helped us select a diamond necklace there. He was always ready to help anyone and I am sure would not have minded in the slightest bit had you whipped out a scope!

I have no reason to doubt it - but there are plenty of consumers who are frightened off (al excetpt us upside down people)

I''m game garry - I just need an extra $200 to buy your idealscope! Yes, $200 cause I can''t JUST buy an idealscope, I''d have to get some loupes, an asset, a calibration stone, and some fancy tweezers!! :D harhar

Diamondheart,

I am in the process of getting a Tiffany & Co 1.35c ring and it is a 7.16mm. Are you sure hers is a 1.4c??? Maybe she is not being honest about te size of her stone.

She could be lying about the size although I wouldn't think so. She is pretty well off. Although I have never seen the Diamond certificate. She has had the ring for about 8 years, maybe Tiffany used a different cut back then?

I have a very large diamond from Tiffany''s. Truth be told I had not closely examined many stones of this size prior to getting mine, but even now, though it is clearly large and stunning, think it faces up a bit smaller than a comparable stone from another source. Again, cannot really check this since no stores stock the sizer I have. Since I have an emerald cut, I really did need the cut to be good or it would not look great, so I guess that might be why...another place might have cut it more shallowly, to have it face up larger...I just do not know.

I have had the pleasure of seeing you gorgeous ring in person, and let me say it''s huge!!! Well cut, etc... ENJOY it!!!! It''s amazing!!!

Diamondfan, I'd LOOOVEEEE to see pics of your ring (is it posted here?). I bet others would to.

My friend has a Lucida 1.6 carat though it's not as sparkling as my RB 3.02 carat or even my pair of 1.5 carat RB earrings and faces up smaller than my earrings too. However, I certainly wouldn't mind at all a 9 carat emeraldTiffany's (that's what you have, isn't it, Diamondfan?)

. Drool!!

. My oh my, that's a MONSTER!!

Big emerald cuts - say +2 0r 3ct need high crowns to create good interaction between facets - so they should not have a big spread

There is a thread called Pictures of my emerald cut finally and though they are awful, I think you can see it there! (I need to get better shots and have Tiffany''s clean it for me prior to shooting them!!!)

i think if this gal was lying about her diamond size she wouldn''t choose 1.4c...that''s a specific #. she''d probably say it was 1.5c.

the stone could be a deep stone, so some of the ctw could be in the pavilion whereas your SC might be a slightly shallower stone giving it more spread. hard to know without information!

It is quite possible that she hasn''t cleaned her ring in years. That would certainly make the diamond face up smaller.

Can not cleaning make the diamond look smaller? I know that a poorly cut diamond would look smaller because it doesn''t reflect the outer diameter of the diamond so it looks smaller.

yes - the upper girdle facets on many if not most cuts are one of the first parts to leak - so dirt affects them more.

The stone on the right is slightly deeper (actually a Tolkowsky stone) than the one on the left - not how the dirt (worn for a week without cleaning) causes the outer facets to loose contrast and light return.

The ideal stone looks smaller when dirty than the shallow one on the right

THis is a bit off topic...

Thanks for that. I had one girl ask if it was a certain size and she was quite off. It made me wonder. Then a friend said, hey how many people actually see that size stone in person? People just do not know so they blurt out whatever...it does not mean anything. Your input helps put it in perspective!

Diamondfan, your ring is truly magnificent!! What a WHOPPER!!

.

I see that you have quite a collection of other jewellery too. You lucky lucky girl!!

.

I also see that you have quite a broad fan base, who seem to really love and respect you, for who you are. I admire that, you do not seem to let your jewellery define you - clearly your family and your friends and you true values are what define you, and I mean that, sincerely.

THANK YOU. That is very nice to hear. I am a jewelry lover from WAY back, playing in my mom''s stuff when I was little. But for all my love of "stuff" I certainly want to always put things in perspective and know what is really important. All the bling and purses etc mean nothing without all the other things being right. That is why I love PS, because I can be here with so many great people who feel the same why I do, who understand the obsession and are not judgemental, and also have their priorities straight! My family and friends come first but the world is prettier sparklier!!! I try to share my stuff, but have not been great about taking pictures.
