Does this sound like a lot or just right for repair?

I wanted to get the eternity band that FMIL gave me fixed. It has 4 broken/missing baguettes (out of 14).

SO I took it to a respected local jeweler for a qoute and they just got back to me.

I don't know yet what the color and clarity of the diamonds are... but they will get back to me on that. I know they are high color and clarity though... so I'm expecting E VS at the least.

Anyway... Each baguette is 2.5 points so the ctw of the replacement would be 10 points.

So they want to charge me 170 for the diamonds.

And 150 for the setting of them.

SO a total of 320 for the total repair to the ring.

Now, me? I'm thinking it's high. I'm thinking of sending it to Quest or ERD for repair as it is a vintage piece (they both do repair to vintage pieces) and they have good baguette sourcing (my baguette halo experience is paying off here).

Am I wrong? Is this reasonable? Should I just go with it?

I would check around and then decide don''t you think?

It seems a little expensive to me too. Good idea to get a few other quotes first, compare prices, then decide.

Yeah. I''m thinking so too. Maybe I''ll pick it up from the jeweler this weekend and send it to ERD or Quest (I think they need to physically have it to qoute it).

Any preferences over the two PS jewelers for repair work? I know Ellen had hers done beautifully at Quest so I''m leaning that way.

Yeah... I just talked to the guy again. FG SI (eyeclean) is what they were going to use... the stones in the band are VS though. So I just think it''s too high.

Not gonna do it.

Back to the drawing board. It''s hard to get qoutes and shop around b/c the ring has to be evaluated in person and the diamonds measured before they qoute is given. Still I think I can get lower.

take pics for the vendors and email the pics to them for evaluation

Wink did the channel setting on my e-ring with gorgeous F-G colour VS2 melee that are really well cut (can''t remember exactly if they were Ideal but they were the ones he really recommended) - they sparkle like mad. Might be worth emailing him to see what he''d quote.

Thanks Pandora... I''ll check with wink too! I have to get it back from the jewelers in order to take some pictures of it. Then I''ll see if they can qoute with the pics alone!

Weighing in late Gypsy but while it doesn''t seem like too much money, they dont seem like a match. You can do better! Cant wait to see this ring...

I''ve contacted Quest. As they are working up a proposal for my re-set project that sounds fabulous and reasonable. So, I will probably have them do both. I have to say, I''ve been very impressed with Pete at Quest. Really on the ball.

Yeah. So far I've been really happy. Had a phone conversation with Pete yesterday. I felt he got what I was saying right off the bat, which was important. The price he qouted me is just right. And he had ZERO problem that I wasn't starting the project immediately.

Never made me feel like I was wasting his time so far in advance. So again (I talked to them about my baguette halo, but they were wary-- and honest with me about that-- as they had never done the like) they were really flat out up front about everything.

I've asked them for a sketch or something to confirm that everyone is on the same page... and if it wasn't for these STUPID shutdowns at work I could do this next month. Sorry... rant there. John really wants to get a sketch upfront cause he's not entirely comfortable with the long distance thing -- it was different when we were in Jersey we could have driven to Leon, or ERD, or Quest... and double checked everything... but now that we are in Cali... he's worried.

I'm not though. It's a fairly simple project. I really believe that. And I think that they can do it.

yay gypsy, sounds like your really moving forward. Quest is really good about sending out pics of the process so hopefully that will help John feel better b/c he can be involved as it unfolds.

Yes he is.

I was also very impressed with him and the whole process when he fixed my OMC ring. And I felt his price for that was reasonable too.

I hope everything turns out the way you want!
