A jeweler who has a long time business in my area made an awesome custom setting for me but i purchased the center stone from another place because i got a better stone for roughly $1000 less. (I was looking for an excellent 1.2-1.25 gia F or G color vs2 or si1) I was able to find a great 1.24 for 9k where his prices were around 10 for stones that were not as nice IMO. The setting is done and now hes telling me that I need to get insurance during the setting process and that his insurance policy does not cover them while they are setting stones, which he says is normal. I called around to a few other jewelers and they all said they have insurance that covers diamonds during setting as long as they can inspect the stone before setting to see if there are any issues that might cause trouble. I also called my renters insurance place and they said the same thing. What say you guys ? Is my jeweler trying to give me a hard time that might lead to big problems or is it normal for me to have to get my own insurance during setting

It's normal for a jeweler to require you to get insurance on your stone if your stone is purchased from somewhere else. I got my setting from Sholdt and the stone from James Allen. I insured my stone through Jewelers Mutual before sending it to Sholdt for setting.

As far as I know, insurance that covers craftsmanship, which includes damage during setting, isn't even AVAILABLE to jewelers so I'm curious what those other stores are talking about. Most jewelers will accept breakage risk on stones they sell and a few will take it on stones they didn't but whatever losses may happen are coming out of their pocket, not some 3rd party insurer.

Note 1:Jewelers DO typically have insurance that covers other sorts of risks like theft and fire.

Note 2: As mentioned above, as a consumer you can buy insurance that will cover damage by a jeweler while working on the piece but even that I think is void if YOU are the setter and break it yourself.

So, the moral of the story is that your jeweler is telling you the truth, and it is the reason I always encourage people to buy the setting from the diamond vendor whenever possible. But when that isn't possible, I'd insure through Jeweler's Mutual since they have a way to insure before the diamond is set by providing the info on the diamond and setting. Call and ask for details.

Nope not fishy at all. I have had to get insurance before for setting reasons.
