I have a princess cut, G SI1 half carat ring. My husband was told when he bought it that there was a feather in the ring, which was barely noticeable. I look at my ring everyday, obviously and I have looked at every angle and every crevase. Last night I noticed what looked like a scratch on the outside of the diamond. It was not on the outside however, but the inside and it is near the feather that was there already. I swear this was never there before. The feather is goind up and down, and the "scratch" I noticed is side to side and significantly bigger. What could this be, how could it have happened and should I take it back to the jeweler? I am very upset about this. Thanks

Not sure if your feather was surface reaching or not. Does it tough the surface or come close to the surface of your table? Sometimes a jarring motion that is near the feather and strong enough can extend a feather. Basically it is a seperation or break in the stone, due to either a fracture or cleavage (natural misalignment of atoms), often white and feathery in appearance.

So considering that it''s in a delicate place in the stone, it is entirely possible to have further aggravated the feather. Not sure what a jeweler could do if this is the case, but if they have a miscroscope, they could do a bit of searching to tell you how and what happened, if anything at all, or at the least clean your ring, and see if it''s not just dirt...?

Can this new mark be seen from all four sides of your diamond in the pavillion (bottom of the stone) as if it can, it may be a girdle reflection. There are many posts here about this if you do a search, as lots of people only seem to notice it later and then think it is a crack going horizontally across the stone.
