Do you think this would be a mistake?

I currently have one 5.7mm OEC (G/H, SI) stone at SS waiting for Ari to find a match for a pair of studs. I continue to look in the hopes of finding another great deal, as I only paid $350 for this stone, because it has a decent chip in it, which Ari says can be hidden in a bezel. I have seen a stone that is 6.1mm and I/J color at a decent price. Do you think this is too far off to be a decent match? I realize that facet pattern is everything, but from the photos I've seen, I think I'd be ok on that front. It's really the size and color difference that I'm questioning. Yay or nay?

hmm, tough call. The color difference I dont think will be an issue as they are not right up next to each other and should be minimal in color difference. My concern would be the .4mm size difference, I am not sure if that is enough to be a noticable difference in earrings.

It really is hard to say. Matching these OES stones can be more difficult but when they're for earrings, the good news is your head is in between the stones making the difference much more subtle.

How about if you ask Ari for his professional opinion?

I couldn't do it. 5.7 and 5.8 possibly, but definitely not 5.7 to 6.1. I always buy pairs that overlap in measurements when possible...for example, 5.77-5.80 and 5.79-5.82. I also wouldn't go more than one color grade different in a pair.

MGR, I'll definitely ask Ari, but I've been trying not to bug him, so I figured if the folks here gave me an opinion, I could decide if it was even worth having Ari take a look. Matching OECs for earrings is definitely tough, but I'm willing to be patient...

Oh, I have a picture that may help illustrate this. A long time ago when trying to decide the size of studs I wanted, I had WF take a picture of a .74 next to a .61. Diameters of 5.8 and 5.5mm. There's no way that these two stones would be a decent matched pair at least to me, so I think the difference between the two you are talking about would be even greater.

Here is maybe a better comparison compliments of Good Old Gold: .70 and .81, so 5.7mm and 6.0mm.

Yenny, I don't think I would like the color difference or the size difference.

What is your budget? I can keep you in mind while I peruse ebay :))

ETA: I realized that neither of these stones are likely to have lab reports, so in reality the color could be closer than it seems. I think seeing in person could be the determining factor here. As to size... in the big blown up photo that DS posted it is obvious, but in person on stones that could have a little wonk to them, separated by your head, in bezels no less... Well, again, seeing in person might be the determining factor. So I think worth seeing.

In these pics that size difference is obvious, but IRL on your ears, not sure...

I just think if you ever wanted to sell them for some reason, making a good match is really important.

Here is a smaller picture of a .65 and .70...so 5.6mm and 5.7mm. This would be my maximum deviation in size.

Great visuals DS! It is always so helpful to see pictures so Yenny I hope this helps you as well with your decision.

Thanks for the photos DS! It did help me make a decision, as did your comment about selling them in the future. I'm going to pass on that stone and wait for Ari to work his magic! Thanks for making this such a clear decision!

I'm glad the pictures were helpful, Yenny! I obsessed about the size of studs I wanted for awhile and ended up with some nice images! In the case of the .65 and .70, the price difference was huge but the size difference was so tiny that it helped me to decide to go with .65's. I figured that would be a good size to get jackets for when I wanted them bigger, too!
