There is just something so nice about getting the mail (which is usually a task I only look forward to when I've ordered something that's arriving via USPS) and opening greeting cards from people who care enough to have taken the time to send them. It's just one of those old-fashioned things I would hate to ever see fully go away.
Yes people vary.Maisie|1320881297|3058155 said:I send Christmas cards. We don't call it 'the holidays' here.

It also sends a subliminal but powerful message that everyone ought to be a Christian, which is as problematic as everyone ought to be Muslim, or atheist.

If I were Jewish and somebody asked me if I sent out Christmas cards, how is that diminishing or offending me? I would just respond "no, but I send out Hanukkah cards." In know way would it make me feel like that person thought I should be Christian.

Gotcha.
"Holiday Card" has you covered in every situation.
Inclusion is better than exclusion.

I guess my point is why do we have to be inclusive? If I ask someone if they send out Christmas cards, they can say "Yes, I do," or they can say "no, I send out [fill in the blank] cards." It's not offensive, it's a request for information. I think if anything's offensive it's deminishing the fact that Christmas is a Christian holiday. If someone doesn't celebrate it or doesn't want to include the religious parts, fine! But don't force me to remove the religious aspects of it when that is the whole point of the day in the first place.

No problem.
This is PS, not a forum of one religious group, hence I phrased the question in the way I felt was most inclusive and respectful to all.
If you are of the persuasion that everyone should be X, or you insist on calling them X-cards in your personal life, or you send X card to your X friends and Y card to your Y friends, no problem.
Holiday cards seemed the best term to use for the poll.

I think you should start a different thread for all the religions and non-religions. Then we can all go vote in each of them. That's sure to give the accurate snap-shot that I think you're looking for by starting a poll on this topic!

That might be a lot of threads, and by the time I finished a few new ones would have probably been invented.

If I was a Jew in temple speaking to fellow Jews I'd use the term Chanukah cards, if I were a Christian in church speaking to fellow Christians I'd use the term Christmas cards if I were speaking in a place I reach everyone (like Pricescope) I'd use a term that is as inclusive and respectful as possible, Holiday card.

Sorry Maisie...I just don't see how being religious (or not) makes one a good person. Are you a kind person, a loving person, an empathetic person, a generous person, etc. That is what makes someone a good person...in my mind anyway. (bet this gets deleted too)

I agree with Maisie.
DH and I send out CHRISTMAS cards to about 25-30 people regardless of their religion. Because WE celebrate Christmas and like to share that joy with our families and friends. If someone has taken offense to our gesture then we certainly haven't heard. It has nothing to do with thinking we're better because we're Christian or anything like that. If we weren't Christian then we'd send out generic holiday cards or whatever would correspond to our religion.
People really get offended over receiving a card in the mail? IMHO that is ridiculous.

I reported my own comment because I know I crossed the line in posting it. I'm such a chicken!
But in answer to your question, I feel like I am a good person. But I don't go around saying I am a good christian.![]()
