DH and I are planning on moving to a bigger place soon, and are trying to cut all things unnecessary out to save money. DH thinks a landline is unnecessary because we don''t use it. Most times both phones aren''t charged, and the only calls we get are telemarketers or a mom trying to get a hold of us after both cell phones didn''t pick up. We pay a pricey fee monthly (about 70 dollars or so) for nothing. Our internet and cable are bundled through our cable company, so there''s no problem there.

I worry about all the random places that have our house number as a reference, though. I suppose I could change it.

What I''m asking is: Do you still have a landline?

No, we do not have a landline!

The only time we''ve had one in recent years is when we needed to use our fax machine a lot. . .so, I guess we''ve had a landline for a total of about one year over the course of the last five.

Granted, I live in a college house with two other college students, but we don''t have a land line. There really is no need for us to have one.

No land line, and haven''t had one for at least 5 years.

The only issue I have with it is that my only contact number is my cell, so EVERYONE gets my cell. Sometimes I wish I had a home phone to give out, so I don''t get businesses calling my cell phone all the time. However, in the end, it''s just not worth the money.

Nope, and when we moved in to our current place about 18 months ago we didn''t even bother getting one put in.

Not since 1999. What can I say? I''ve been a gypsy. Especially when I lived in Chicago. I always changed homes and I was never home.

We do - we have a digital cable, cable internet and landline package. Though I''m embarassed to admit, I don''t know our new landline phone number yet! I give out my cellphone for everything personal.

I MUCH prefer talking on a landline whenever possible, though. I find cellphones uncomfortable for longer phone conversations.

Great, thanks everyone! I can''t thing of any convincing arguments for keeping it- it''s just an expense that wastes money for doing nothing. I guess in the times of cell phones, there is really no need. Especially since we''re only home about 5 hours a day- which isn''t including when we''re sleeping!

Nope- and I am happy about it. Doesnt carry the stigma it used to.

If you MUST have a plug in phone I heard you could get one at radioshack with local and long distance service for like an annual fee of $20 ... dont know much about it though... but might be worth checking into.

Yes. Cell phones are not so great for you and do not always work well in certain areas.

I still do because if my cell phone won''t work for whatever reason, I''ll still have a phone I can use. Also, a land line is more secure and can''t be hacked into if you have to call about things of a personal, financial or medical nature. It''s always good to have a back-up.

Nope! Haven''t had one in years and it works just fine for us. Nobody ever called the landline except telemarketers anyway, everyone calls the cellphone first. There are phones you can buy that work using your cellphone minutes. Look on best buy''s website and you will find it. We are thinking about getting one. It is just a cordless phone and somehow uses your cellphone minutes so you have a "homephone" as well.

Nope, DH & I just don''t see it as necessary

Yes, we have it because it came with our cable and internet.

For sure! There''s no way I''d feel secure making calls from a cell. There are more reasons which have been addressed by Madam B.

I have a bundle package from our telephone company. So yes I do have a land-line. I probably wouldn''t if I didn''t have kids..... Cell phones are not reliable enough and get "lost" to easily with kids around. Believe me, I use my land line to call the cell phone all the time.

We definitely still have land lines. My house phone has the main and three extensions and we have a separate business phone for my husband. Then we each have a cell. Something''s usually ringing.

Nope, haven''t had once since I first got a cell phone in like 2002.
With cell phones now, there''s really no need unless you''re a business!

Although my parent''s still have a land line, and probably will keep it forever.
But they''re a little behind on time times. I mean, my mom had dial-up internet up until about a year ago.

No landline for us. Cell is always there, so what''s the point?

No we don''t have one and we really don''t need one. I could get one here for cheap just a fax line but not yet...we don''t need it.

My dad has a landline, too, which is hilarious because his phone is always off. Unfortunately there is some weird glitch that makes his internet not work unless his phone is being used. The phone company came out to fix it but couldn''t figure out why it works that way. So until they find out, he''s got to use his landline to get DSL!

Nope - we haven''t had one the entire time I''ve been in MN (3 years) and prior to me moving here Mr. L didn''t have one either. We each have cell phones and that''s all we need.

We actually just got a landline after using only our cell phones for years. The reason was because I was worried about 911 services from a cell phone (if ever needed). We''ve moved several times since getting our phones and so our numbers reflect our original location. I''m sure that there are ways that the call could be traced to our address but I just felt better knowing that in an emergancy a 911 call could be traced directly to our address (like if I had to call then hang up or something). My husband works second shift so I''m home alone at night and I''m a bit of a chicken.

Of course our landline is only $14 a month which is a super deal... our local calling area is fantastic... everyone we need to call is within it (it covers about 10 counties in 2 states). We actually get it through our local electric company as part of their triple play option (cable, internet, phone).

Maybe you could just get "dial" tone service... I think it allows you to dial 911 and may allow others to call you on the line but I''m not sure. When I checked on prices from our phone company (who we did not go with) it was something like $15 a month.

To be honest... if I wasn''t getting such a good deal I probably wouldn''t have a landline but I''m glad we have it just in case. I wouldn''t pay $70 for it.... heck... I only have basic cable

+1.

towers go down and sometimes we don't have access via cell. sometimes visitors are here or housesitters and their cell lines don't work. having the landline insures i can make local calls at any time and people can call me on it from wherever. i reserve my cell phone number and only give it to those i really want to hear from when i'm out and about.

movie zombie

eta: cost is $19 per month but for me its worth it.

AW: yes I only have a land line.Thinking of getting cel also, but land line stays.Old fashioned and far behind the crowd in technology ...

No we don''t have a landline. We didn''t bother setting one up when we moved in.

Ditto.

Kind of. We have access to a landline because we get a bundle through the cable company where we pay $10 less per month to have phone, internet, and cable than we would if we cut out the phone. However, we don''t actually have a phone connected, so basically we don''t have a landline. I also have many other friends who don''t. I don''t think it''s necessary these days.

Yes, we still have a landline. I don''t think the long term health effects are known about cell phone usage, so I don''t like talking on my cell a lot. And if I was going to, I would definitely use a Bluetooth.
