When someone (a regular poster) creates a new screen name for the purpose of sharing a personal story are you able to tell who they are based solely on the details they give in the thread?

I can never tell, and I admit I try to figure it out!

Just wondering what you all think.

Disclaimer: If you think you know the person who posted a particular thread, please don''t post that person''s s/n in here! I''m sure I don''t have to tell you that but you never know.

Sometimes I know right away...especially if the poster in question has very distinctive grammar mistakes or sentence structure. But sometimes I have no idea.

See, I figure people would be able to tell it is me by my grammar.
I use a ton of elipses in my posts. I don''t pay attention to anyone else''s grammar though.

So it IS you!! Eh, I''m just kidding. I get curious too but I''ve never figured one out for sure. And I''d never call someone out - ooof, that would be awful. I think the curiosity stems from thinking that more details from previous posts would help "tell the tale" so to speak.

Its so hard to see people go through difficult times & not know why bad things happen to good people. Its human nature to try to find a smoking gun or something so you can feel more secure that YOU won''t end up in the same position. Yanno?

I honestly never know. Sometimes I wish I did, esspecially if it''s an advice seeking post because I could better tailor my advice to a specific person--knowing their background and all.

But...

I totally get the privacy thing, and not wanting a specific issue or event tied back to them. So, I never try too hard to uncover someone.

I can usually tell, especially if they''ve got distinctive syntax.

I can never tell. I didn''t even think to look at how they write!

Two of them have been obvious. I really don''t know why anyone bothers to create a new name, have some courage. Life happens.

I knew you all were on to me so I created this thread to throw you off my scent!
Except, I knew you''d see right through it so now I''m denying it.
But then again, if I knew that you knew that I knew that you knew........

Ha, I always wonder, too! I don''t really try that hard to figure it out, though...maybe I''d know if I tried harder?

I never know. but I don''t try too hard to figure it out though either.

I tried posting anonymously once and it didn''t work. I didn''t realize until I hit submit. After that I decided I wouldn''t try to do anything anonymously anymore. After all, this is cyberspace and with exception of a few ladies whom I''ve met in person, no one really knows me IRL.

I never can tell.

Note to self: use alternate grammar and syntax when posting under your assumed assumed name!

I have *never* been able to figure one out lol My detective skills aren''t that great apparently.

Honestly, and I know this may really sound pollyanna, but I swear it is the truth -- I never even TRY to tell. I figure they are distressed and went to a lot of trouble to mask their identity and I try hard to respect that privacy.

If I can''t tell immediately, I don''t do anything to try to find out. But you know how when your best friend or SO calls you, you can tell their voice right away and never have to ask who it is? That''s how it is with several posters and their syntax. The way they phrase a sentence or use certain words screams out, "I am __________!" I know their posts regardless of name or picture.

I try hard not to know if that makes sense. I just try to offer advice and support if I can. I guess I''m really easy to fool.

This is how I feel to. I do not GET why people try to be MORE anonymous when few people really know them on here (if any) anyways. I find those threads annoying and usually ignore them.

I never can tell, don''t care if I can''t tell and don''t bother ever trying to tell. Basically I don''t care.

LOL

Not sure why, but this really struck my "funny bone"

I think I've posted anonymously before... I can't remember. I know I thought about it. Meh. I wasn't trying to keep it separate from my "PS identity," whatever that is. If I recall correctly it was something I didn't want my husband (then boyfriend) to recognize as me, since he knows "who I am" on PS (and I have a sneaking suspicion that he reads some of what I write

, out of curiosity if nothing else). Not a life-shattering thing, just something I wasn't yet ready to discuss with him.

Remember there was the thread about PS reputation or something like that? Maybe if a person has an "anonymous" question, they'd feel like the reputation they've created would influence others comments about the situation that is brought up so they try and do the blank-slate thing?

That said, are there that many anonymous threads? I see one every once in a while but never read any of them because they're usually too long and it is kind of odd becoming involved and investing time in a post made by a person "hiding."

ETA - oops, I guess I never answered the main question! There was one or two posts in the past that I wondered if was made by particular members and I even searched a few threads to see if general situations matched up. That was a while back.

I can''t tell but I suppose I haven''t been around long enough to recognise people''s writing styles!

Yes. Especially when that same poster has posted about that situation before (and after) using the same initials, same details, etc. Sometimes I can''t, but I usually read a lot of posts...

And princesss, I hear you on the syntax and grammar.

nahhh, not me, cuz you guys can tell by reading my 6th grade grammers,so wouldn''t bother with it.

There has been only one poster I recognized, and unfortunately, after revealing her problem (a serious domestic difficutly), I don''t think I''ve seen her post regularly since. Perhaps she felt the need to leave her ''situation'' and was embarrassed because of it. What a shame; I know PSers would have liked to help bolster her courage.

Most people are very generic in their details, on purpose; and that usually offers no clues to their identity. And that''s as it should be. I don''t attempt to ''find'' them.

See that grammar would give you away in a nano second...

We have teased you a lot today. I love your great sense of humor.

One thing, I have always wanted to know... You love breakfast and always ask us what we are having. So what is your favorite thing to have for breakfast?? I know you don''t eat fast food...

Do you make it yourself, or does your lovely wife make it for you??
