I will elaborate. As in, anyone that you personally know, who is just waiting until salons open up to get nails done or hair done. In some cities in my county, some of these salons have been operating throughout the quarantine. True story. And some recently publicized their openings and they had customers!
I prefer to err on the side of caution so no thank you. I just don’t see how it can possibly be safe and I have been lamenting that these types of businesses, and massages, tattoo parlors —anything that is a physical contact business—would all have to shutter—and my heart goes out to all the business owners. But I actually have a coworker who has been getting her nails done.
Any thoughts on how these could ever be practiced safely?

Reputable tattoo shops are some of the cleanest places I've ever patronized. Many nail salons already include mask wearing as a standard practice. I actually think some of these would be much easier to transition to "post-covid normal" than say a restaurant. Looking at what some places are doing with restaurants (ie plexiglass everywhere) its eerie and weird, but going to a nail salon with someone taking similar precautions doesnt seem as weird? Does that make any sense lol

I guess that I would worry about the possibility that an infected person Who is asymptomatic would have to touch me for a good hour or so. I would worry that perhaps the person who is touching me was completely healthy at the start of the shift but came into contact with asymptomatic or infected throughout the day and then touched me.

I'm confused by your parameters. Right now, no. Plus we're not going to have those services where I live for months. My daughter can do her own nails and hair. DH is shaving his own hair. I don't need either for months. Edit: I see you mean in the future. I don't know. I have no plans, because I'm high risk. Hair salons could manage distancing, but masks idk.

That could be said for many jobs/appointments. Like even a server, bringing food/checking on you multiple times over your 2 hr dinner, who is also interacting with many other patrons throughout their shifts.

But to answer your actual question, I unfortunately know quite a few people who are just itching to get their nails and hair done. Someone at my work even bragged on a conf call about getting his hair cut even though its banned.

Servers don’t necessarily touch me, though. That is the difference between these physical contact occupations.

And omg! Yes! the bragging is how I know some are willing... and I’m talking about showing off her fresh manicure!

What can I clarify for you?
By anyone I mean not just your Immediate family. Friends. Extended family. Acquaintances.
By physical contact occupations or services I mean that the vendor has to touch you to provide you with the service. By amid pandemic I mean as long as we have the threat of Covid. Bc let’s face it. Many of these businesses might open before there is a vaccine.

Thats true, it's all about your personal comfort level. To me, someone being within my 6' bubble with no mask on is more dangerous than someone touching my feet but wearing a mask. Someone touching my cutlery/plates/glasses that I will then touch makes me more nervous than being in a completely sanitized environment getting a tattoo for an hour.

I would go to a salon for a haircut if they were to open, but since my DD gave me a trimming last week guess I can wait another few weeks for a real haircut.

Ive been doing my own nails and cutting my hair as well as my whole families (including coloring) with no formal training for about 6 years now.

I just realized that some friends might think I'm breaking contact precautions to go do so, so just keep in mind a lot of us do our own beauty up keep and have gotten quite good at it!

Lol! For sure! But no! I’m referring to people who brag about going to these places.

I do. I got my nails done in the beginning and had them done a week ago. I do have autoimmune diseases and have already been crazy about sanitizing for the last two years. Then people probably thought I was crazy spraying down pláne seats, not anymore. My nail artist is spraying everything all the time, I am not worried. BTW, no she is not touching my hands without putting on new gloves. I am already doing a lot, you cannot avoid everything. There is just no way. I moved into my new House ten days ago, I could not postpone it anymore. I was sick with stomach issues this week, who knows what it was. Cannot live as hermits forever. I do see friends at my home, eventually I will have to travel. I order take out and there is a risk involved for sure but no time cooking, shopping with working on the house, plus I do want to support local Businesses. Take out is extremely popular here right now. I think the risk is much higher in that than seeing a beauty specialist. Shops are starting to open up slowly here now.

That is fabulous. I wish I had your skills........I’m desperate for a cut and color. When my area allows it, I’ll be there. The salon we go to is spotless. Now for my doodle....

Yes, unfortunately, I do know people who WOULD do it and HAVE done it. My best friend -- who has MS! -- is bolting to the first salon she can get to when our state allows openings. And someone who regularly participates in a weekly call I do for work has nonchalantly mentioned twice now that he's had his hairdresser come over and cut his, his daughters' and his girlfriends' hair. I think I said it was done in the back yard, but still.

Personally, I am not eager to get out there and let strangers touch me any time soon! To be fair, I have to admit that I'm in the process of growing my hair out and I don't color so I am not a regular at the salon right now anyway. At some point though I'm sure I will need at least a trim, but I think that's many months off, pandemic or no pandemic. I've also been doing my own no-chip manis and painting my own toes for years, although I do enjoy the occasional pedi, especially at the beginning of summer. My nails have been bare since all this started though because I figured even the no-chip wouldn't make it through all the hand washing I'm doing, and I read that the virus is hard to get out of chipped polish ridges, even with a brush.

To get to your last question about things like this being practiced safely... I guess if the services were provided with everyone wearing masks and thorough hand washing going on before and after, as well as a cleaned facility (or outside if possible) that's probably as "safe" as things could get. Still though, for me, no thanks -- not yet!

No, I cut my DH and Son's hair in the backyard last week. The one who most desperately NEEDED a haircut was the dog. We ordered dog hair clippers, shampoo, and nail clippers. Watched some videos on youtube and did a decent job. We can all handle our nails ourselves. DH works out a TON so he has a theragun. No one else I personally talk to is even thinking about these services. I miss my facials the most but I have a steamer and DIY.

I wish I could get a haircut, but salons are all closed. To be honest I think if nail technicians/hair dressers wore new gloves and masks for each person and the clients also wore masks it would be quite safe.

Though I'm not arguing it should happen today or anything. I expect in CA those things will open (likely with requiring masks/gloves) in the next month or so--depending on how the slow reopening of other businesses goes in the next few weeks.

I would only consider it if I could get a cut outside. I have short hair and usually go to the barber. I am not comfortable sitting inside for a long period of time. When I do go to the grocery store I go to a small store and I'm in and out in 10-15 minutes.

I don't have my nails done by anyone but myself but there were plenty of people on nextdoor app looking for nail techs to come to their house. which being whats going on in South Florida, straight stupid. They were putting info out there on who would come to your house and how much you should ask for and so on. I had to tell these stupid hens to stop putting these people at risk and take that convo private (by going to someone's house they can have their licenses here!)

I really miss spring/summer pedicures. But then again, I'm not going out at all this summer, no one will notice. I just like the relaxing experience. I could paint my nails myself if I wanted to. It's not rocket science, and I'm not picky since it's a for me thing anyway.

I will gladly go get my hair cut when my hairdresser's salon re-opens. I was due for a cut before COVID, so it's even worse than usual now.

I can cut my daughters' hair myself, but my son is looking pretty shaggy these days. Will gladly send him to the barber once it opens as well.

BTW, schools in my area are re-opening soon, and we plan to send our kids back. For multiple reasons. That said, we consider ourselves a low-risk family... no health issues, and we don't have elderly relatives around either.

I personally believe shelter in place should continue until a vaccine is available or the virus can no longer find a host, lives are far more valuable than the economy.

But, I realize this is not realistic or sustainable, so it will depend on each individual's choice given their circumstances and priorities, hopefully understanding the risks.

I'm hopefully optimistic that as a society we can care for those who need help, and that society will continue to be entrepreneurial and rebuild. The jobs and behaviors of the future may not look the same, but this is an opportunity to pivot, adapt, and change. While travel, dining, and service industries may change forever, there will be more demand for healthcare, consumer products, and technology. We just need to provide the training, resources, and opportunity for those in need, whatever that need may be.

I got my hair cut right at the beginning of March before everything closed so I’m good until fall. I’m lucky my cat is calm about grooming and trimming nails and brushing.

Funny story. My coworker, who is a physician and has done procedures on humans, literally was tearing up at the idea and anxiety of cutting his dogs nails out of fear of hitting the quick. He tried and it was so harrowing that he has vowed never again.

My daughter got a tattoo on Thursday. The shop was closed to public. It was only her and the artist all day. They both had masks on, he changed needles and cleaned the station every hour. It wasn’t my first choice for her to go during the lockdown but she made sure they were both safe.

If it's not essential my other half and I will be buying gift certificates for later and continuing to stay away.

It's not just the risk of contracting coronavirus. There's also the risk of contracting something else (or breaking something, or developing something) and needlessly winding up at the mercy of an overwhelmed and understaffed healthcare system that has clear priorities that don't involve non-COVID concerns.

Everyone's risk threshold is different. For me keeping my loved ones and myself physically healthy tops absolutely everything else. Everything else can wait - there will be time later.

I am not at all eager but I will get my hair cut. It used to be as straight as could be but has developed a wave in the back, in the last several years. I don't know what to do with it and just keep my hair fairly short, but it's at least twice as long as it should be and it's awful. Then I will go back into isolation, at least as much as I can.

I have heard of people getting "illegal" haircuts. A sentence I never dreamed I'd write in my lifetime.

i know i shouldn't find this funny :mrgreen2: but we sure are living in odd times right now

My OH had been cultivating a mullet after a 20 year absence but the other day he got so sick of it he shaved it all off ....just in time for winter ???

My sister is a beautician and she has people calling, texting and mailing her letters begging her to do their hair.
The state of IL sent her a letter saying they will permanently suspend anyones license to practice who is caught cutting hair at this time.
Her insurance company sent her a letter saying her liability insurance will not cover her cutting hair until the governor says its ok to cut hair.
Techicaly its illegal for her to cut her families hair.

i will have my hair cut and hilites done as long as my hair stylist confirms with me that she will wear gloves and mask and the salon will not be buzzing with more than a few people. As far as nails, I do my own. Always have.

Nah, it's been almost a year and a half since I cut my hair, no rush that's more to grow and donate.

I don't get manicures or pedicures or tattoos so nothing to worry about there.
