I was under the impression that if you have good vision, you don''t really have any need to go to the eye doctor until you''re over 40 or so. I have excellent vision and haven''t had an eye exam in nearly 20 years (I''m 26).

Now I''m hearing that it''s important to get eye exams regularly.

How often do you get eye exams? How is your vision? Has your eye doctor ever found anything wrong with you, other than just the need for vision correction?

I don''t go every single year, I go when I run out of contacts!! It is really important to have an exam done (you are supposed to go yearly), besides your sight you should have an examination done to make sure your eyes are in good health overall. I have had clean exams except for nearsightedness since I was 14--no glaucoma, retina detachment, etc., and I''m 31.

Same here. I only go when I''m down to my second last pair of contacts.

People who wear contacts should have eye exams yearly. Those who wear glasses should go every 2 years (at least).

For those with "normal" vision (there is no Perfect vision btw)

Babies should have an eye exam around 6 months and then again around 3 yrs old.

An eye exam is needed to start school and then it is recommended that a child have an eye exam every two years.

It is also recommended that an adult have an eye exam every two years until they are 60 at which point they should have an eye exam annually.

If your family has a history of hypertension, glaucoma, macular degeneration, have ever had eye surgery or at some other risk, you should have exams yearly.

These are the AOA's recommendations.

Other triggers for vision or eye problems (they are not one and the same): low birth weight, oxygen problems at birth
thyroid disorders, herpes virus, HIV, assorted VD's
family history of cataracts, retinal detachments, etc.

Did you know that an optometrist can identify a brain tumor through your ocular orbit or through their vision screenings before you notice any thing wrong? Often they can also see diabetes, and HIV before you can too.

I never go for an eye exam. Last year I decided to because I was convinced I had a bulging eye (don''t ask, I''m weird that way).

Anyway, still have 20/20, no pertruding eye (which my eye doctor found very amusing) but he did find that I have the beginning stages of glaucoma and will probably have to do something about my vision once I get into my 40s and will most likely go blind in my old age. Blindness runs in my family so it didn''t surprise me.

it had been almost 10 years since my last eye exam and I wear glasses. I finally scheduled an appt. a few weeks ago b/c my hubby got me "contacts" as one of my Christmas gifts. surprisingly my prescription had only slightly changed. I will try to go every couple of years from no on though. and so far...i hate the contacts, i feel like i have sand in my eyes and cannot seem to get used to them. so, i may just opt for a new pair of frames and call it a day...

MrsS,
If it doesn''t feel right, go back to the eye person and say so. Not every brand fits everyone. Also, a minute change in curvature or something can cause a bad fit aka sandpaper effect. The job of the eye doctor/fitter is to keep testing and trying until YOU get a pair that you feel comfortable with.

The computer ate my first post...boo....

I don''t go yearly because in general, I hate making appointments--even if at the time they sound fun or enjoyable, by the time the appointment rolls around I usually feel to lazy to go.

I go every year. I wear contacts so I pretty much need to go. But, you should go have an eye exam...For years and years I told FF about going and he said "Nah...my eyes are fine!" So he finally went and turns out he needed glasses to wear from time to time (mostly for driving or watching tv) Now I can tell him "I told you so!" You see, he thought his vision was fine because he didn''t know any better. Now he sees clearly and he said it''s freaking awesome. haha!

I get one every year. Actually i''m pretty good at taking care of dental, vision, ob/gyn appts.

I got my first adult eye exam during grad school - I was getting major headaches and everyone I knew thought it was probably eye strain.

I got glasses for reading/computers....and haven''t been back since. I should probably stay on top of it, but I don''t.

I work for my aunt, who is optometrist. And one day, a guy came in. He hadn't had an exam in 5 years. She had to tell him that he is losing his vision (fast.)

Now, of course, he was failing eye tests, so he didn't have excellent vision.

But besides vision, when they look back there (you know, shine the bright light into your eyes

) they can see a lot of things.

Me too!

I wear contacts so I go yearly it is good to know what is happening with your eyes you only get one pair and they are precious.

I go at least once a year, sometimes twice!

I''m diabetic, so I have an optometrist and an opthamologist.

Adults should go every 2 years.

I go once a year, I need to for my contacts. I am a little paranoid about it, I have a family history of macular degeneration and cataracts. I get the exam/test where they take a digital picture of the inside of my eye. Its pretty cool, and nice that the the doctor can compare how you look this year to three years ago, etc. Its a little more expensive, but I feel its worth it.

My grandfather was an optometrist, so taking care of our eyes has always been really important to my mom. I go at least once a year (sometimes more when I''m having contact trouble.)

You would be amazed at how your prescription can change even though you don''t realize it!

i think eye sight is the most important of our senses. i go every year. my mother not only has had cataracts but also both the wet and dry macular degeneration. i''m taking no chances.

Yes, I do--I started getting a yearly check up about 3 years ago--very nearsighted.

I get yearly exams (since I have vision insurance) even though my eyesight is pretty good. I don''t wear contacts or glasses. I have a pair of glasses but hardly wear them. Things get a little blurry very far away or at night when it''s dark.

I insisted on going to the eye doctor when I was about 6-7 years old even though my mom was convinced my eyes were perfect. I had grabbed a pair of her old glasses and put them on to be able to read a book cover that was about 14 feet away that I couldn''t read otherwise. So now I have to go every year or two years because my glasses/contacts stop working as well. I''m due for a checkup actually.

Every year, huh? I think I''ve only been twice...ever. The second time, I had raging conjunctivitis and I remember the doctor saying I still saw better out of my infected eye (EWW).

Maybe I should make an appointment ASAP. I see well, but perhaps not as well as I could!

i try to go yearly, but sometimes that means every 1.5 years. My grandmother had glaucoma so I get tested regularly.

Uh oh, I haven't been in nearly six years (since I was 18). I have very good vision, am slightly far-sighted (my prescription is something like +0.05) and have glasses for it but don't really need them at all (I just went through a phase where I wanted to wear glasses 'cause I thought they were cute

). Yikes, no idea I was being bad by not going.

I guess I'll add that to the pile of way-overdue doctors' visits!

i know that i must have went as a kid, but i honestly cant remember ever going. that is bad isnt it. i guess i just figured i would go if i had a problem. i dont have vision insurance. what is that? why dont they offer it?(small rant) how much does it cost do get an eye exam with no insurance?

Depends on your area, maybe 40-80, with probably most around 55-75?

Once or twice a year. My eyes change alot..prescriptions change twice in a year usually. (I wear contacts). My vision is too important to me, to take for granted..I have more eye exams that I do pap tests!
31.gif
Also..having had skin cancer..there's a teeny wee freckle (perhaps mole) on the back of my eyeball that gets attended to every year, to make sure there is no change. They haven't figured out if it's a mole, a freckle, or what?? Can never take too many precautions when it comes to your vision, or health in general!

I haven''t been in probably 3 years and should go for sure. The last time I went to DH''s uncle who has fancy stuff. He took a picture of my eye turns out I have a scar on one of them. He asked if I had a traumatic injury but I can''t remember any. Luckily he didn''t seem worried it would cause any issues.

I do not wear contacts or glasses.
I decided to go for an exam as my eyes get tired from spending the day on the computer. My vision was fine but they are very concerned about my high eye pressure which is off the charts. I have to go for some more tests. High eye pressure is associated with glaucoma. I am 24.

If you have vision insurance, just go. Your eyes are too important. Even if your vision is fine, just go. Your health is worth half hour of your life.

i have crap vision, so i go once a year and cross my fingers that my prescription hasn''t changed.
hubs on the other hand only has gone once. he has fantastic vision, knock on wood... he went a few years ago just because he got eye insurance [because of me]...
