and the person you're talking to just isn't comprehending what you are saying at all? replying to you without considering what you have said?

every day of my life :nono:

Yep. I think of them as "waiting for their turn to talk" as opposed to "listening."

Grandma. That's my grandma exactly. Except she doesn't wait for her turn to talk - she interrupts (and tries to finish whatever news or story we're telling her even though she doesn't know the story!)

All the time. They are thinking of what they want to say instead of listening to the conversation. Sometimes it's just irritating or funny, but during an argument it makes me lose my mind.

I answer phones for a living. The Government offices I work for use 5 digit extensions. I get at least five calls a day that go something like this:

Me: Blank County Switchboard, how may I direct your call?
Caller: I'm trying to reach Mrs. Blank, but when I dialed the extension it didn't work and sent me to you.
Me: Okay Sir/Ma'am you need to use the last 5 digits of the number for the extension.
Caller: I did that. 1234.
Me: That's four digits Sir/Ma'am, you need to use five. What are the last five digits of the number? (There are multiple exchanges, so I can't just supply that first digit.)
Caller: I TOLD YOU. 1234!!!
Me: Sir/Ma'am, what's the full number?
Caller: 555-1234.
Me: Okay, so the last 5 digits will be 51234. That's your extension.
Etc....

*sigh*

Absolutely

I'm so, so glad that I'm not the only person who has spotted this phenomenon. I have to show your post to DH, so he knows I'm not just picking on him (which I totally am, but he DOES this!!!)

Anyone I'm trying to explain diamonds to. I get a lot of head nodding and awkward grinning and when I'm done, they ask me exactly the same question they asked me before  .

Yes, every day at work. And I am paid to give people advice.

Haha, we have the same grandma!

Yep, I just had a conversation like that this week with someone who either didn't or just didn't WANT to understand what I was saying. It was actually kind of fascinating. I think this person understood what I was saying but chose to ignore it because it didn't match up with what this person wanted reality to be. It was so interesting (aside from being kind of maddening).

Yep, its usually my hubby and he is not waiting to reply...he is just ignoring me (I'm usually a person of few words so I'm not
sure why he thinks I just like to hear myself talk)! :x

Yep. Pretty much every time I talk to a client on the phone, and sometimes even in person. My boss and I sometimes don't know what to do with people. We do "baby steps" and lots of hand-holding, but the ones that don't seem to comprehend always seem to mess up their own cases. Ugh. We say things, repeat them in person and on the phone and also give every client a small packet of information so they know exactly what to do and what to expect and yet we still get people that just don't get it.
