Do you buy toys/games/gadgets for your kids year round? Or just on birthdays and holidays?

We have bought things for A as she's grown and developed. I don't buy gadgets, but we do buy her toys occasionally, and books fairly regularly. So far, she much prefers books to pretty much anything else, which is fine with me and I'm happy to indulge that.

We often buy something that she plays with a lot or particularly enjoys at her creche. For example, we've bought her paints, an easel, toy kitchen and some dressing up clothes through out the year. I don't really see toys as special treats, so much as developmental aids (depending on the type of toy) and as such, don't restrict buying them to special occasions. More frivolous stuff maybe, I would keep for special occasions. Stuff like soft toys, for example, which she likes to snuggle with but not really use in any imaginative play.

Of course, this is the direct out come of a masters degree in psychology - I do over-think any and all aspects of child development.

I don't buy a ton of stuff year round, but if it's going to be anything, it's books, music, and art stuff. I did buy her a toy after she finished potty training and she's totally not interested in it. We also bought her puzzles when we saw it at Costco and bought her Candyland when I saw it for 4 bucks. That's pretty much it over this year.

We buy her one big thing for her birthday. For christmas, it will be books, music and a toy of some sort, but minor ($30 or so).
