I''m thinking about buying a 5 stone asscher cut ring with 30-40 pointers. The stones would be custom cut by the jeweler to match exactly. Should I have the stones certified by GIA before setting them into a ring? The vendor suggested that I have the stones appraised by an independent appraise instead of certified because of time and additional expense involved in sending the stones to GIA. I''m not really concerned with the time. The certification would add about 10% to the price of the ring.

Is it necessary to have the stones certified? If I ever decide to sell the ring, would the certificates give the ring more value vs. an appraisal?

It''s up to you whether you want to pay to have them certified. I think you have the right idea with having them appraised by an independent appraiser though. That''s a great idea, definitely. I had the option of having my stone certified when it was unmounted from it''s original setting, but I decided not to bother since I had 2 different appraisers do appraisals and they came to the same conclusions about everything that was important about the stone. Gee, can''t wait to see pics of this ring when it''s done!

Baby Monster,

Are we after the same kind of ring again? :) You posted some helpful things to my thread when I was looking for a unique pave band. Now I am looking at doing
a 5 stone or double row of 5 stone ring and recently posted about how imp. is quality in that size!

No answer for you - I am way too new - but wanted to say hello and that I think we must have
similar taste! I just looked at a pretty 5 stone asscher around that size at a local B&M.

Are you going to wear it alone?
Are you not considering a memoire band now? Wasn''t that you?

I guess we do have similar taste, Lisa

. Did you change your mind about pave and decide to go with larger stones?

The 5 stone band will be my everyday ring so I plan to wear it alone. I looked at memoire bands but I haven''t posted about them, so you''re probably thinking about someone else. I haven''t seen memoire bands with asscher stones. I''m pricing out the ring right now. Do you mind sharing what the stones were in the asscher ring you saw and how much it was?
