Ok. I have been cleaning my ring with dishwashing soap and loving the results. I talked to my brother about this (he purchased a nice size ring for his wife) and he said NOT to use dishwashing soap. He said dishwashing soap is very abrasive/strong and you have to be careful because diamonds can become pitted. Hmmm sounds strange to me. I know I wouldn''t use dishwashing soap on my car... so should I not use it on my diamond?

Soap might leave an unwanted film, but I don''t think the diamond will become pitted. Try using Mr. Clean or a diluted ammonia solution and a toothbrush. Rinse well and then dry with a lint-free cloth. Works well.

The diamond won''t become pitted! Imagine all the diamonds which have been burned which polish up well, some are also subjected to acid baths, scorched by blowtorches etc. If you are happy with your soapy cleanings then carry on, you might like to use an ammonia based cleaner on occasion as indeed a film can build up.

Dishwashing soap works great. Windex works great. Mr. Clean works great. Drain cleaner even works pretty well! Anything that breaks the bond of the grease will do the trick. Personally I recommend against strong ammonia based cleaners, not because they don’t clean well but because the fumes are bad for your lungs and you just don’t need more of that kind of thing in your life without a good reason. (skip the Draino for the same reason). Whatever you use, rinse it off thoroughly with water when you’re done.
