I think one of my New Year''s resolutions will be to start using my DW.

I have the Wusthoff Ikon knives and a few All-Clad SS pots and pans - both companies say it''s safe to put these items in the dishwasher. But I am still hesitant.

What do you guys do? And if you use the DW, have you ever had any problems?

I would absolutely not wash my good knife in the dish washer, but I do wash all of our cheap knives in it. Some of them have rust spots

which I'm sure is caused by the washer. The good knife (same brand as yours) is supposedly dishwasher safe, but when I bought it the woman at the knife store said to always hand wash it.

I put my all-clad stuff in the dishwasher all the time and they come out just fine. I've heard some people say not to (I don't know the reason why) but I haven't had a problem in the last few years I've been doing it.

I put my All Clad''s in with food still on them... and they do just fine! I love my dishwasher! It actually WASHES the dishes! LOL!

My knives are the Cuisinart solid stainless... so no wood or handles... and I''ve never had anything happen to them at all.

I think the science these days of the detergents make them really safe for most items!

nothing wrong with putting SS in the dishwasher.

I''m not a fan of knives in DW, though. I''m pretty lazy with using my steel, I prefer someone to do it for me.

What about for other things that don''t carry a label that they''re safe for the dishwasher? For example, I bought a set of platinum rim drinking glasses - would you put those in the DW?

You mean the pots and pans because the food sticks to it?

I just got these for Christmas, they''re beautiful, I wanted them, and I love them...but I am not a "cook" so I hope I do OK with nonstick!

i don''t put glass of any kind in either....glass gets etched over time.

really, so none of your drinkware? does etching definitely happen 100% of the time or does it have more to do with water hardness, etc.? Because if it definitely happens, I''m not putting my glasses in there either!

Anybody else not put their glass in the DW, for the same reason?

Just use your discretion.I don''t put everything in my DW , but glasses are very clean and no problems.I guess it depends on your dishwasher. Some s/s pots do say dishwasher ok, but if you read the warranty information it won''t guarantee against damage done by dishwasher.I would not put new expensive pots in it right away.I use my DW daily but some things never go in it.If you have gentle cycle and it works you may be ok.If you use pots cycle its heavy duty and I have not used it.My DW is relatively new and it does great job.

I have Wustoff Grand Prix II knives and I put them in the dishwasher.

That said, I really shouldn''t. I can tell they get dull after I run the DW. I would hand wash your knives, save yourself from having to sharpen them all the time.

I can''t answer about the pots and pans as I don''t have stainless steel pots and pans.

It really depends on your dishwasher but mine runs for about 2 hrs so I don't want to put my nice knives in the dishwasher. They will last longer if you don't. I hand wash them. Also, I put a piece of fine china in the dishwasher and a cup broke so they are always handwashed now. Lately I have put the all clad in the dishwasher but I usually hand wash.

I definitely wouldn''t put anything with platinum rings in the dishwasher. The only stemware I put in the dish washer is my set of super cheap Target wine glasses (which I have specifically so I can wash them after a party or something). Any other stemware gets washed by hand. I put our drinking glasses in the dishwasher, but they are all cheap pint glasses, not platinum rimmed anything. I''d err on the safe side and wash by hand (especially if the packaging doesn''t say anything about being dish washer safe). The way I see it, if it''s cheap and replaceable, put it in the dish washer. Otherwise, better to be safe and wash by hand.

never never never put a good knife in the silverware tray in a dishwasher.
If you want to use them in it lay them down flat on the top shelf then remove them right away and hand dry them.
Better yet just don't.
They will get dull and chipped.

Lalalalala....

Guess who puts hundreds of dollars of knives in the dishwasher? That''s right! Freke!

But perhaps that''s because I don''t use them that often AND I can sharpen them myself.

we hand wash wusthoff knives. but, our ss pots are calphalon and we put them in the dw. the box said it was ok. so far, no problems. we've done so for two years.

i wouldn''t. i hand wash our stemware.

We has Wusthoff classic and I put them laying down in the top of my dishwasher and they come out fine. We have a sharpener and DH sharpens them all the time.

My pots and pans are the Cuisinart stainless and it comes out of the dishwasher clean as a whistle.

OK, thanks guys.

Seems like a definite no with the knives (glad I asked, I had run them in the DW twice already - hopefully it''s not enough to cause any permanent damage), a no to anything kind of delicate or rimmed, and a maybe with the SS pans - I''ll have to check out the warranty to see if they do mention the DW.

Your All-Clad lifetime warranty will be fine; the SS line is (the only line that is) advertised by All-Clad as being completely D/W safe.

A steel is the metal stick you hone your knives on.

Nonstick things are generally not recommended for dishwasher.

JulieN,

OH! I get it...I didn''t know it was called a steel...thanks for clarifying.
