Hi All.

What is the difference between a girdle that is listed as "faceted" and one that is not?

Thanks!

A faceted girdle means the cutter polished facets into the girdle. If it's not faceted it may have a slightly granular appearance but does not influence the grade of the diamond.

Some cutters believe polishing the girdle may cause color to be reflected back inside. In near-colorless diamonds it's not the concern that it is with slightly colored and below. You'll often see unfaceted girdles in J or K and down and small goods, .25 and lower.

Interesting girdle thread, here.

Generally it should be.

There are new machines - I posted photos of one in the thread linked above - that are putting a fine finish on girdles now. More than bruted but less than polished. A polished girdle is one that is brought to a high luster.

Actually, the girdle of my new stone is the kind John mentions above. The appraiser called it a highly finished, "polished" girdle - although not faceted. All I know is that it is VERY attractive, even under the 20x loupe! No complaints here.

Ok John yes it's an inside JK between DF and many here on PS. Lynn was looking at a stone that had a bruted girdle. No one knew what that meant. So Dancing Fire said maybe it's like those girdles women wear that are brutal. It's been a JK ever since and I always have to laugh everytime the subject comes up. Maybe something gets lost in the translation but most people will know what I'm referring to. Lynn has a beautiful stone with a bruted girdle. ETA: Lynn is way too skinny to ever need a girdle, Lol!!!!!!

ROFL. Awesome.

There are some pretty funny dia-jokes in our offices here'bouts too. The puns flying around at JCK are truly rib-snorting. As you can imagine, there are girdle references a-plenty. But no one can match Garry and his 'angles' angle.

I think we need to have a PS conclave. Imagine if we could share our innermost trade-related funnies in real-time.

Buuuut, for the record (and my own sanity!

) IS my diamond's girdle "bruted"???! I didn't think so. I know it's unfaceted - but it's not considered "bruted", or is it?

Lynn, the common appraisal lexicon may not include the precise description for what the machines Luc and I described are now doing (as per the photo you linked in the other thread). Neil, Dave, Rich or Rock may chime in with their interpretation vis a vis appraisal...

Brian calls what you have a finely finished girdle. It is not faceted, not completely polished, nor does it remain bruted. It is in a warm and cozy place somewhere in-between.
