Hi,
We bought a loose diamond which only had a small white line inclusion when looking under 10X magnification. It was graded as VS1. After setting the stone in a medium 6 prong setting it appears when looking from the side that the entire bottom of the stone has a crack which makes the bottom look like it could just fall off. When looking from the top of the stone however, no crack is visible. It appears that it was set by someone in a rush or inexperianced. Is this type of crack possible? Should I see it from the top? Is this a prism effect? Thank you for your help.

It was a bezel head and he soddered a tiffany prong on before setting the diamond. He also stractched the prong head, use a yellow gold sodder instead of a platinum one, and put a prong head in crooked. He took two weeks so that he could "take his time" and then I called him two weeks later and it was even done. I decided I didn't want to bother him when I noticed these additional problems so I got the head polished and the ring rhodium plated. Do you think he will suggest that the jeweler did this?

Thank you. That really helps me a lot.

Michael

No problem. I hope you stay around Pricescope as there is a lot of education here.

Hi there,

I''m having a little bit of difficulty following the sequence of events, but if you gave your diamond to a jeweler to be set and it came back cracked, here are the first questions I would ask:

1.) Did you report this to the jeweler immediately? What did he say?
2.) Was the stone ever seen by an independent appraiser?
3.) Is the stone insured?
4.) Do you have a GIA or AGS grading certificate to compare the inclusion plot to?
5.) What is the jeweler''s policy on damage done to stones by him during the setting process? Was that policy clear to you before you gave it to him to be set?

It sounds as though you have a couple of things going on here. A possibly cracked stone and a poorly done setting. I would clear up the issue of the stone (probably the more expensive part of the equation), and then ask him how he is going to make this poor workmanship right by you. Once the stone is squared away, you may want to go to a different jeweler to set it.

I hope some professionals chime in here because I''m new to this. These are just the issues I would want clarification on if I were in your shoes.

Good luck, and let us know what happens.

Cheers,
LizzyD

I think it is a girdle reflection after looking at other pictures. As far as the poor workmanship, I would like to go back to him but I already tried to fix the problem myself. I had the prong heads polished and the ring rhodium plated. There are still various visible stratches on the head, it is yellow gold near the prong head, and a prong head is crooked. It does however look A LOT better. I am still not happy and would like a different setting. I am afraid to go back when I already fixed the majority of the problem. To answer your question about certification, he said it would cost an extra $250.00 to get a GIA certification and was not really work the money. I figured since she was going to wear it forever that it would not matter. I also did not get it appraised.

It''s not a crack. It''s the reflection of the girdle. You don''t have anything to worry about.
