I know little to nothing about RBs, other than that I think they're purty

so I wanted to ask you all whether my brother made a good selection.

Here are the stats that he shared with me:
0.77 Round Brilliant
H Color
SI1 Clarity
5.86mm diameter

diam:ex
depth:vg
crown:ex
pavil:g
table:vg
culet:ex
girdle:ex.
---(I thought that the depth, crown, pavilion, and table were supposed to have percentages?)

Set in a 6-prong platinum solitaire, size 6.

Price: ~$6,000 including setting.

I kind of think he overpaid, based on the PS search function. Seems like he could have gotten bigger (around the 1ct mark?) or better cut quality for the price...?

Hi love,

Who graded this stone, first of all. I have never seen stats like this....

Me neither

I have emailed him to ask.

Hi Love2Cook!

The preliminary info or color, clarity and carat size look okay but I''m not sure what to make of the rest of the details you provided.

Do you have any percentages that you are able to provide in place of the ex, vg & g? I''ve just never seen this before and am not sure as to what that translates into numbers wise.

Does you know if your brother has the certification for this diamond? If so, who was it graded by?

The price is extremely high, I am sorry to say. An ideal cut stone that size, color, and clarity will run around $3000. A platinum 6 prong setting can run from around $500-$1500. If he is still in the return period, I would urge him to shop a little more!

I'm glad you all are questioning this, I thought I was just being an RB dummy in thinking there should be numbers attached! I asked him about the cert, hopefully he will get back to me soon.

I told him to come here to find his diamond, showed him the RT forum and everything. He must have been dead-set on using the "family jeweler" that his girlfriend knows, because I don't think he'd have bought a stone like this if he'd done the research I suggested.

Absolutely. This is THE strangest report I have ever seen.

And, I hate to say it, but anytime we hear "friend of the family" and "jeweler" in the same sentence, it''s usually not good.

But hey, YOU tried, that''s all you can do. Well, that, and urge him to return it if he can/will.

My .818, H, SI1, ACA, AGSO ideal cut RB was about $3000 (maybe $3200 without discounts), a 6-prong platinum setting would run anywhere from $500-900ish. So, $6k is way too much.

Haven''t heard from him yet... here''s my question for you ladies:

When he said he was thinking of proposing/buying a ring, I told him to please let me know if he''d like help picking a stone, because I so love to help with that. I showed him Pricescope and bookmarked the page on his computer, then explained why you can get a better diamond for your money online... especially with RBs, which are easier to judge based on stats (even if it''s always better to see it in person, when possible). Yadda yadda. Didn''t hear a word from him on the subject for about two months, then he emails this info to me today.

Should I call him and tell him what I/you all think? Or just let him be happy with his purchase? He sent me a couple pics as well, it looks okay (just okay). I feel SO bad bursting his happy balloon, he seems so proud!

Find out if he can return it or trade it in first ... If so, burst away ... If not, leave it be.
If his gf doesn''t know much about diamonds, she should be thrilled regardless? ... fingers crossed.

How about sending him the links to those three Good Old Gold stones I gave you? Obviously he''ll have to decide, but it is painful to see someone waste money when they could get a better stone for much less money. If nothing else, perhaps he could negotiate a better price on the one is looking at.

How about sending him this thread?

That's apparently who appraised it... Global Gemology Labs, exactly right, Ellen. I don't know why there were no numbers in what he sent me. But he just typed it out... didn't send me a scan of the report or anything.

I just got off the phone with him... he wants to get it appraised before returning it (he has 6 days to do so). So I need to find an independent appraiser ASAP. GIA, right? BUT, don't they typically appraise for much higher than the actual retail price? What should I tell him about that?

While he's doing that, I'll get the ball rolling by compiling a list of other contenders (starting with the ones you posted from GOG, DS2006, thank you for those!!) to send him once he's made his decision.

not a good sign...the stone may not even be H SI1

Hmmm. That''s weird, the grading reports info just doesn''t jive with one another.

Look up at the top of this page under Resources. There will be an area to find IA''s.

Here''s a pic of the stone... I can''t really tell much from it, but again, I don''t know RBs!

Thank you, Ellen!

Yeah, no way we could tell anything from a pic. He needs to have it appraised.

The appraisal probably won''t be much help. My mother has my old diamond studs, and she had them appraised to put on her insurance. In spite of them being 2 clariy grades lower than I was told, they still appraised at twice the price I paid. The thing is, we know he overpaid because the true value can be found by looking at similar stones for sale. I hate for him to waste the money on an appraisal when he can save 1-2,000 if he''ll just return the ring!

I agree with this idea ... No point spending another $75 - $100 or so on an appraisal when it is already clear that your brother overpaid and can definitely find something much better. Since he is lucky enough to have the option to return, if he is aware of what could be better - price & quality - maybe he can be convinced to just go ahead and rtn it. His girlfriend couldn''t be upset with getting a better diamond, could she?
