I''m looking to buy a 1.6 ct emerald cut solitaire diamond ring. I think I was offered a good price on the diamond, but I would like to ask others opinions since I don''t want to get ripped off. The jewelry store offered it to me for $6200.00. This price includes the platinum ring and shipping. Please give me your opinions! It is EGL certified with the following dimensions:

Weight: 1.6ct
shape : Emerald
Measurements:8.45x5.55x3.75mm
Depth:67.6%
table:73%
Crown:8.6%
Pavillion:55.7%
Girdle: Thin to medium polished
cutlet:none
Polish: Good
Symmetry:Good
Color grade: H
Clarity: VS1
Fluoresence:none

It''s from a Jewelry dealer in Los Angeles. They have a 10 return policy and he guarantees the ring is certified. Any opinions or options would be greatly appreciated.

The price is actually very low which would lead me to be suspicious. The crown is quite shallow. Have you compared this stone side by side with other EC's? If you have and you like how it performs, I would say go for it but get it appraised by someone reputable immediately to make sure the cert is accurate.

I have not compared it to any other EC's. I have only seen a picture of the ring, since I live in Chicago. I plan on taking it to a reputable Jeweler once I receive it to get an appraisal. Would a Rogers and Hollands Jeweler or other major Diamond chain due an appraisal for me? How much would an appraisal normally cost and what should I ask the Jeweler to look for?

I agree that the price seems on the low side. But it's worth checking out. Maybe it's just a really good deal. As for an appraisal, make sure you go to an independent appraiser who is a graduate gemologist. In other words, do not go to a retail outlet because they may have an ulterior motive in telling you that the diamond is not good (i.e. THEY want to sell you a diamond!!). I would imagine an appraisal from a GG can run anywhere from $45 to $125. Good luck.

I would say to check out Doner Diamonds if you are going to LA B&M. They let the GIA cert do the talking and they are patient and helpful. They are one of the best deals I saw downtown.

I am no expert, but...Always look at a few diamonds, enough to get an idea of different quality in cuts and ratio shapes of Emerald. it is my favorite cut, and I have tried to educate myself on it as much as I can with out going to school for it.

If you are looking for good weight distribution look so that all the weight isnt too much on the bottom, and look to avoid a Bow Tie effect...they almost all have it, but the less the better. And if you can get fire from an Emerald cut and you like that effect in one, then go for it. The table at 73% sounds high, but likey perfectly fine...Im sure others with experience can chime in on this.

cheers!

Ditto on Doner Diamonds. They really are a pleasure to work with. I have taken several friends shopping there and one ended up with a really nicely cut oval that was D SI1 with minimal bowtie and great spread.
