I purchased a 1.71 ct round brilliant diamond for $16500 (setting not included) this morning at a extremely reputable store, but am now having buyer''s remorse. I did a lot of research prior to the purchase, but was not knowledgeable on the specs that constitute an "ideal cut" - I asked for an "ideal cut." The diamond came with the following GIA grades:
Depth - 61.5%
Table - 58%
Girdle - Medium to slightly thick, faceted
Cutlet- None
Finish - Excellent
Symmetry - Good (should I be concerned that I asked for "ideal" and bought a stone with a good symmetry?)
Clarity - VS2
Color - F

In my research since the purchase, the table specs are 53-57.5 and symmetry of excellent for an "ideal cut." Both my table and symmetry fall outside those specs. Please advise - did I pay a premium for a stone that isn''t "ideal."

Thanks so much for your feedback.

With the information given, your diamond is probably a fine, but not ideal make.

It's tough to know exactly without the crown & pavilion angle/height-depth information, but the 58% crown and the "good" symmetry would keep it out of the AGS "0" ideal cut category, and the "good" symmetry would keep it out of the AGA "1A" ideal cut category (58% table still falls in the AGA 1A category).

Perhaps your crown and pavilion parameters are within the ideal cut categories, but it's impossible to know (either for us or the seller) without the crown and pavilion information (which can be obtained from an AGS certificate, a Sarin or Megascope report, or a gemologist's measurements).

As far as whether you paid a "premium" or not, the chances are good you paid the correct price for the diamond with the make it has (a fine make).

If you like the diamond, and paid a fair price (an independent or objective appraiser could tell you this), you might want to keep it. If you were intent on a trade recognized "ideal cut", you might want to ask the company if you could trade up.
