I am trying to give my ff potential diamond specs for my "perfect" diamond, but have noticed many ppl on PS are counting other specs besides the 4 C''s into the diamond quality.

Do they really matter that much? Will I end up with a not so favorable result if I just gave him my 4 C''s and then let the rest just kinda fall into place?

How do I hint on other specs? What is a good list of ranges for other specs?

Basically I told him

between 1.2 - 1.5 carats
Color between F, G and H
Cut - Ideal/ ACA WF / H&A
Clarity- VVS2, VS1 , or VS2

what else would you give? Isn''t it enough????

Crown and Pavilion angles, these best to just tell him to use the cut advisor, Polish and Symm grades, preferably VG or better and girdle thickness range, in the thin to slightly thick range. Also, depth preferably not more than 62.7% but most of us like something smaller, like 62.4% and below to have better face-up dimension.

These values mostly determines the light return performance.

EDT:
I am assuming these are for round brilliant cuts.
Also, didn't see that you are looking at WF ACA, those will meet these specs. Similarly for GOG signature stones and Crafted by Infinity stones.

If you are looking only at ACA, or other branded h&a such as Infinity etc then the specs will take care of themselves.

However here is a guide some of us use in order to find a well cut round.

depth - 60 - 62% - although my personal preference is to allow up to 62.4%
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes, look for thin to slightly thick, thin to medium etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above

note - with crown and pavilion angles at the shallower ends ( CA 34- PA 40.6) and steeper ( CA 35- PA 41) check to make sure these angles complement in that particular diamond - eyeballs, Idealscope, trusted vendor input - check as appropriate!

As the above implies, configurations depend on each other. A little give here can still work with a little take there.

From expert John Pollard.

"With that said, here's a "Cliff's Notes" for staying near Tolkowsky/ideal angles with GIA reports (their numbers are rounded) A crown angle of 34.0, 34.5 or 35.0 is usually safe with a 40.8 pavilion angle. If pavilion angle = 40.6 lean toward a 34.5-35.0 crown. If pavilion angle = 41 lean toward a 34.0-34.5 crown.

GIA "EX" in cut is great at its heart, but it ranges a bit wider than some people prefer, particularly in deep combinations (pavilion > 41 with crown > 35)."

thanks for the great tips.

this is the first time i''ve heard of infinity diamonds, how do they match up next to GOG and WF?

Glad to help!

Infinity are a brand of top cut h&a diamonds which are certainly comparable to GOG or WF's h&a stones. You can read up on the brand here.

Wink Jones of highperformancediamonds above sells Infinity.

Fantastic! I am very giddy for this whole process and I don''t want to overwhelm him with these specs, but hopefully he''ll take them into consideration when looking.

I pretty much feel like I''m a little obsessed right now, but after reading PS discussions, I feel like I can''t let details slip through. These are important if you want a good quality diamond that will last a long time.

Thanks again.

You are most welcome! You are definitely on the right track, it is best to research as it is a big purchase and one you will be living with for a long time. You wouldn't buy a car without popping the hood, to me diamonds are no different, you want as much info as possible in order to make an informed choice. I can promise you that the effort you are putting in will be well worth it for both you and your fiance when you end up with a ring to be proud of!

I''d direct him to Pricescope for more expert advice. Heh.

I get the feeling that you want him to pick the super performers but kinda afraid to appear ''demanding'' eh? If he''s really keen in picking out the diamond, I wd suggest he spends a little time here in PS.

Yes exactly. I try to share with him my newfound joy in hanging out at PS, but I don''t think he has as much patience as I do with the forums. Perhaps he''ll do it on his own after I send him a couple key links.

Kinda brings me to concern I had before, is it ever a turnoff for the ladies to shower the FF with these tips?
