Hi everybody, thanks for the great expert advice on this site! I''m in the early stages of shopping for an engagement ring. In addition to finding a great stone, I''d like to get info regarding where the stone was sourced from, and where it was cut and polished. Are there any sites where I can get this info, or will I be forced to shop blindly?

On a side note: I''ve taken an interest to a square radiant cut stone set in a solitaire antique style setting. I realize that this is a highly vague description, but if anyone has any pointers on where I could get a start on this search, I would really appreciate it!

Thank you!

I purchased from www.goodoldgold.com and they provided socumentation on where my diamond was mined from etc. I believe that all of their Isee2 diamonds come with that type of info...

Thank you for the replys! I''m having a hard time finding the source/cut/polish info though, I must be looking in the wrong place? Is there a particular link I could check out to give me a rough idea?
Thanks again!

Hi, Marmi,
If the diamond was sourced (mined) in Canada, the stone's girdle has an inscription engraved on it. Canadian sources use several inscription "marks": a polar bear, a maple leaf or "CMSD" followed by a number (there may be others; these are the ones I've seen). On the AGS report any information about girdle inscriptions is found under comments on the left hand side of the document. GIA reports have this information as well, but without looking at one I can't tell you where it's located on the report.

If the stone is mined outside of Canada, it's my understanding (others please correct me if I'm wrong!) that the vendor (Good Old Gold; High Performance Diamonds, Brian Gavin, etc.) will be able to get you the information about where the stone was sourced.

ETA: Oh, sorry, I forgot to answer your question about how to find out where the stone was cut and polished. The vendors listed above can give you that information, too.

So my advice is to find a few stones you're interested in and contact the vendors via e-mail with your questions about sourcing. They'll be very good about getting back to you!

I don''t think this info is routinely available, even to our best suppliers. With the Canada diamonds, yes certain constraints on sourcing is built in, and I see the branded ISEE2 diamonds also come with some of this info.

But otherwise, I think it will be hard to access.

Ditto Ira, other than that you can ask the vendors who might know.
