Hi All,

I'm a newbie to the board and the world of diamonds. I plan to propose to my girlfriend before the end of the year and need some help on selecting a nice diamond. I've been visiting local jewelers as well as online such as BN, WF, and GOG.

Jewelers tell me you must see the diamond in person to see if it suits your tastes and they each have their branded stones as well. I haven't seen one but they also talk about diamonds with cuts of more than 58 facets that almost sparkle too much looking like its fake. Not sure if I should look into these?

Online vendors say go by the rating specs (AGS or GIA), return policy, and no sales tax but jewelers will not be liable for diamond.

In order of significance: no naked eye inclusions, brilliant colorful sparkles, and no noticeable yellow (whiter the better).

I think 1.5carats is a good size and would like to stay around $7-10k budget for the stone.

I will set it in a Tiffany setting (6 prongs than 4 makes it look larger? :naughty: ) and have her pick out the ring. Maybe it will be a Tacori, Neil Lane, or Simon G.

Thank you for your replies in advance!

From my experience, I agree with people who told you that round diamonds with more than 58 facets look like fake stones.
I think you did a good job (fixing a budget, achieving diamond knowledge, visiting online stores and local jewellers, doing a priorities' list)...so, put your potenzial candidates to PSers' judgement.

suggestions..
Most people say that G-H, VS2-SI1 Ideal-Excellent cut is the "sweet spot"

whiteflash has an upgrade policy.... a great reputations, and ACA- Ideal cut

Cut is what makes the stone sparkle, Ideal cuts face up whiter, brighter, and sparklier.... Excellent cuts are great at well!

There are many stones on James allen in the ideal-true hearts for 7,000 - 10,000 in the 1.48-1.60 ranging incolor from J-D and clarity from VS1-SI2.... you need to see how you feel about color and clarity to narrow it down more.
