Hi everyone,

So I just came across something interesting about a diamond I recently purchased.

When i purchased the following diamond:
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-VS2-Very-Good-Cut-Round-Diamond-1509707.asp

I purchased it under the impression it was a VS2. The certificate online and the description both said it was a VS2. The actual certificate i received also says it is a VS2.

BUT

When I check the site now it shows an older GIA certificate dated July 12 2012 rating it an SI1.

My current certificate is dated August 13 2012.

My question is, why does the diamond have 2 certificates dated just over a month apart??

Any comments I could receive as soon as possible would be greatly appreciated as I was expected to ship one of these back tomorrow. I purchased 2 and was planning to keep 1.

Thanks,
Daniel

I'm going to ask a question instead: Which diamond looks better?

If you send a diamond on different days to GIA, it might come back as a VS2 one day and an SI1 the other day, that is totally normal.

They were almost both tied although this one seemed just a bit whiter and more brilliant.

The other one looked slightly better on paper though being a triple excellent and a better crown angle.

This one appeared slightly better and is why I had decided to go with it. I sent a friend a link and he was the one who actually pointed out the SI1 grading.

I understand that GG are human so on any given day the results could slightly change but my question is why it would have been certified twice and in such a short period of time?

Wrong cert on JAs site now? Do the clarity plots match? Usually GIA does not recert a stone so soon, they have a record of the diamonds and I think they don't like people rechecking them like that.

If its the same diamond then the owner might not have agreed with the first SI1 grade so resubmitted it and he/she was right ;)) It came back a VS2.

Call and ask about it with JA if it bugs you.

Yes the diamond plot, angles and everything else match. The only difference Is the date and diamond clarity.

I phoned JA last night and a manager wasn't in and said there wouldn't be one until Monday but unfortunately I won't be able to wait that long as I'm leaving the US early Monday morning.

Is the report number the same?

Just a guess here. They had it graded and it came back an SI1. They disagreed and sent it back for a recheck becasue they thought VS2 was more appropriate. Apparently GIA agreed. This happens routinely, although normally the first report would disappear into a shreader and you would never know it existed at all.

Unfortunately, grading is subjective, so each person may view things slightly differently or have very slightly different tolerances...

I'd be wary of a 32.5 crown angle anyway. I'd choose the other if it is better cut absolutely. We've seen stones with lower crown angles chip.

That's not what I want to hear! lol

I already sent the other one back, like many have said the paper only helps you narrow it down but once I had both this one did just seem a bit whiter. The other one also seemed a bit darker and had almost like a greenish tint to it.

My only concern with the one I'm planning to keep is the crown angle. Should a 32.5 be a huge concern?
