I'm just curious, when I read so much advice about buying diamonds online, sight-unseen, how do you know it's a beautiful diamond. The conventional wisdom seems to be that as long as it's an "ideal cut" (preferably a branded one) you can be assured it will be beautiful. Have any of you ever heard of the "eight-square" stage of diamond cutting? That's the seventeen facet stone as it comes from the blocker. It's not a pretty diamond, and yet the proportions are locked in at this point. It's the work of the brillianteerer, who puts the final 40 facets on the stone, that determines whether or not that stone will really pop. Beauty in a diamond is about much more than just proportions. Don't you think that if you're buying an object valued for its beauty, it's a good idea to see it?

Hi socrates,

Using the tools and knowledge on PS, I think you can greatly increase your chances of buying a beautiful diamond at a great price. Yet, there is still some risk you won't like your pick or it's a dud. Thus the final step is to use an independent appraiser and see it with your own eyes before the return window closes.

I don't think you'll find many here that say that "ideal" cut is enough to guarantee a beautiful diamond. For online purchases, I think most people here would recommend buying from someone they trust who has an eye for beautiful diamonds and who offers a reasonable inspection period so that you truly can see before you decide to finalize the deal. Not everyone lives near a Kesslers, after all.
