There is a stone I’m considering for purchase, it is EGL LA certified.
Here are the numbers:
Weight 2.64 ct.
Shape ROUND BRILLIANT
Color I
Clarity SI2
Measurements 8.97 – 8.94 x 5.47mm
Depth 61.1
Table 56.0
Crown 15.4 %
Pavilion 43.0 %
Girdle THIN TO MEDIUM FACETED
Polish VERY GOOD
Symmetry VERY GOOD
Fluorescence NONE
Culet NONE
CUT GRADE –IDEAL PLUS
Comments IDEAL CUT
Price - $15048

I plugged these into the HCA and it yielded a 1.1 EX/EX/EX/VG

Here are my questions:
EGL LA, HOW GOOD/BAD THEY ARE compared to EGL ISRAEL, BELGIUM, NY? (Especially to EGL Israel, since I have another stone for consideration and it is EGL Israel)
I know that angles are more accurate than %, is it possible to get really bad score with angles and EX score with %? How much variation one should expect? How does the price look?
The stone is 100% eye clean.
THANKS A LOT!

EGL doesn''t have teh greatest rep around here. They''re a little more loose with their grading than say GIA. I remember reading that EGL US seems to be better than reports from EGL labs outside of the US.

If you have a choice between EGL LA and Israel - forget about the latter lab.

The EGL LA might be just fine - have the stone checked out by an independent appraiser just to be sure.

Good luck!

As long as you can have the stone independently appraised *prior* to purchase, it''s fine to consider an EGL stone. Either it checks out ok and you buy it, or it doesn''t and you don''t.

For me personally, I''d likely not buy an EGL stone unless I could get these terms....and if I could get them, I wouldn''t hesitate to consider them.

I had a G color EGL stone brought in for review when I was shopping. The vendor told me it was probably a GIA H, and when compared to a GIA H equivalent, itwas well priced. So, I think you have to have it independantly checked out, knowing that the color or clarity might not hold up to their rating, and decide how you feel about that. If you are ok with a lower color or clarity, and the pricing is still good at the lower rating, than go for it. You also may find it is what they say it is. It seems to me that EGL US labs did better than expected in Leonid''s survey.

I agree with Al, I would make sure the return policy is a no questions asked policy to be sure you can return it if you aren''t happy with it. I''d try to get it to an appraiser before paying for it. (Most vendors will do that if asked.)

guslik..we haven''t seen you around in a while!! getting another stone?! do tell!

if EGL -USA call this stone an" ideal plus" it should also show the angles on the diagram.

sounmds good HCA checks out OK

Get an ideal-scope image if you can.

The good thing about EGL USA is they use SI3 - so their SI2''s can be better than GIA SI2''s which have become a very broad grade.

There is the results of a survey on the lower left link on the home page. It is long but shows that on the 17 stones graded they were slightly softer on color but slightly stricter on clarity than GIA

DON''T BUY EGL!!!! GRADE ARE VERY VERY LOOSE. IF THEY SAY I COLOR YOU HAVE TO KNOW IT''S K COLOR SI2 WILL BE MORE LIKE I 1 CLARITY ON A STRICT GIA GRADING.
NONE OF THE EGL LAB ARE ACCURATE DOES NOT MATTER IF LA, NY, OR ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD
EGL DIAMOND OFFERS A BIGGER DISCOUNT AND SHOWS MORE LIKE YOU ARE GETTING A BETTER DEAL. THAT IS NOT THEY WAY TO GO.

hey My Joey friend - you must be a Kangaroo too?

You keep hopping up whenever there is an opportunity to slate EGL and promote GIA.

You also do a bit of shilling for eli-raffi@*********.net

But we should listen to your shouting and ranting? Even though my advice was based on a very costly independant survey based on 17 stones sent to AGS, GIA and EGL USA.

» GRADING LAB SURVEY
Pricescope conducted an independent survey of GIA, AGS and EGL USA lab grading. In half the cases AGS clarity grading was one grade stricter than GIA. In two thirds of cases EGL USA color grading was one grade softer but clarity grading in a third of cases was stricter than GIA. More... http://grading.pricescope.com/

Why don't you hop right out'a here?

You know - typing in capitals like that - its like your shouting... and when ppl talk by shouting at you... you tune out what they are saying... so the point is lost. and all teh reader skims over the text without taking anything in...

Like watching a American Wrestler do a interview... you see his mouth move... but you dont remember what he says...

Just one good advice: NEVER buy a stone based upon an EGL- Israel - report.

EGL-US might be good, if you know what you are doing.

Live long,

WOW! That's very "Icy White Diamonds" to reply in such a way - after Garry the Cut Nut, the HCA and Ideal-Scope Cut Quality Crusader - with a meager 28 posts!
