Hello,
I have been searching around for a diamond for about a month now, and have gone to around 20 different places. I have it narrowed down between a couple jewelers. I have learned a lot in the past couple months about diamonds, but I am nowhere near and expert. I was wondering if someone can tell me if this stone seems good, I know the price is good, but its almost seems to good to be true!

It is an EGL certified diamond ( he told me in the U.S)
1.37 ct
F color
60.5 depth
60 width
13 height
43 pavilion height
clarity is S12
cut is very good
polish is good ( this makes me a little weary, because wont a better polish make the diamond overall presence look better)
symmetry is very good

He gave me a price of 4,600

do those dimensions seem about right for a diamond that size?
Also I know its SI2, but I barely saw any inclusions with the 10x loop. Do inclusions hurt the overall presence of the diamond, or just the appearance under the loop?

Also, I really wanted a GIA certified diamond, and he said he had no problem sending this out and getting it GIA certified with all the paperwork, it will take approximately 6 weeks. He said he was confident it would come back almost exactly the same as the egl certification. Does that make sense?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks for the help, this is just getting frustrating and I want to be able to make a decision soon.

Yes, what he told you is true... Generally GIA may be a bit more strict regarding grading, so the color may be one or two lower... But it could be dead on, so you never know unless you get it sent out. (My stone is a "d" from EGL, and it is in fact a "d" color... Had it looked at by 2 different GIA gemologists...) With regards to the stone- we would need table size and crown angle to calculate on the HCA. SI2 just means that there may be inclusions visible to the naked eye, and definitely under magnification. The type of inclusion would speak more about the integrity of the stone itself... Some inclusions can make the stone more fragile. It also depends on the location of the inclusion within the stone. Can you give us any more information about the type/location of the inclusions?

Thanks for your quick response, I am going to call the jeweler later and see if he can give me some of that info over the phone. Also when you said the inclusion can make it fragile, do you mean the actual diamond can chip or be damaged?

HI:

Please provide dimensions. Did the lab cert specify the nature of the inclusions?

cheers--Sharon

HI Titans,

Have you seen any other diamonds you like out of interest? Also what are the grade making inclusion/s? In other words which inclusions make this diamond an SI2?

Regarding polish, it is said good and above look the same to the naked untrained eye, same with symmetry - so I would be more concerned with the overall proportions rather than polish and symmetry at the moment.

Yes. Depending on the type of inclusion, and the location in the diamond, it can compromise the integrity of the stone. This means that the stone could be more likely to chip or break if it were, say, dropped or knocked against something hard. I am not an expert on inclusions, but here is a link to a thread that links to good information.

An example of an inclusion that *could* cause issues is a feather. A feather is (for lack of a better term)a tiny crack in the diamond. If it is totally within the stone, and not near the surface or breaking the surface, it may not cause any issues. However if it reaches the surface, or is very close to the surface in a spot that is vulnerable to bumps or being knocked up against something, it could chip or crack more. Keep in mind, some settings provide more protection to the stone than others.

ETA- I have a feather inclusion in my stone, but it doesn't affect overall look, or the strength of the stone, as it is well within the interior of the stone. Feather does not equal danger!!

I called up and told that the inclusion/s where on the facet on the corner? Any Advice?

They werent able to give me the dimensions over the phone, so I have to stop back in on Tuesday, So I will repost then, and maybe someone can shed some light on that for me and let me know if it is ok.

Thanks

If you can, try to get a copy of the certification, or the cert # (I think you can look it up on line) so that we can see more of the details about this particular stone. Are you opposed to purchasing a stone from an online vendor? If this stone doesn''t work out, perhaps we could help you find something else that is similar and within your budget.
