I want to get diamond pear drop earrings to wear on my wedding day 1 1/2 carats each. I have heard when you get earrings you don''t have to get colorless - but you can go closer to near colorless. Any advice about the clarity? Do you need ideal cut??
First,....... Fancy shaped diamonds (pears, princess, etc) tend to hold and/or show more body color than Rounds do. Plus the size of the diamonds is a factor as well. If you're going to mount in yellow gold, you can go lower than if you're planning to mount in white metal. Diamonds in earrings won't get the same scrutiny as a diamond in a ring does, so you don't have to worry about the clarity as much as you might in a ring.
I would suggest you contact a Vendor for this project. Tell them what you want to accomplish and have them source the diamonds for you. Finding a matching pair of Pears won't be as easy as finding a matching pair of Rounds. It will be much easier to rely on the expertise and contacts of a professional.
I would go SI1 or SI2 (as long as there are not any super visable inclusions) and as for the color my personal opinion is that you do not need to go colorless. It depends on your skin tone/hair style and how you are going to wear you hair. G/H in that size mounted will still typically look colorless especially from a distance. I even had a pair of I earrings in a princess cut that were> 1ct each and they were J color and they looked "white".
Most import - focus on the diamond cut to make sure that a huge "Bow-tie" is not visible. This will be a dark spot in the center of the pear shaped diamond. Nearly all will exhibit some due to the pear shape but really bad cuts will have a pronounced bow-tie. This will be visable and make the diamond look cheap, no brilliance/flashes.
i bought rounds for my earrings, not pears, but heres what i did.
i still got them ideal cut..just as someone recommended..what if you watned to reset them later..so i wanted well cut stones.
i did drop in color to an I and clarity to SI1..and you know..for earring, i couldnt be happier! they are white white on my ears, even not in my ears, and they let off all sorts of sparkle..so people tell me, since i cant see them for myself..darn it! and i could not see the inclusions at all without the help of a loupe.
for you pears, i think you can sacrifice in color and clarity a tad, especially if that will allow for bigger size..but thats totally up to you!
please come back with pics when they are done..they sound like they will be stunning! good luck!
