I am sick to my stomach because I just bought diamond earings platinum setting 4 prong from Tiffany''s today and payed 7,950 not counting tax. The earings are:
.84 total weight, F color, VVS1/IF
I got home and looked at Blue Nile equivalents on line and found that I could get more carats, better color, platinum, 4 prong, ideal cut, etc for almost half the cost.
I want these earrings to last me for years. Did I do the wrong thing? My husband and I are not very diamond savvy so we didn''t really know where to go to get them. I don''t need to pay for the name, just the quality of the diamond and the setting.
Please provide some advise on whether I should return them and shop around some more, or if the price was reasonable.

If you want the Tiffany's name to your earrings, no.

If you want incredible diamonds and can live without the Tiffany's name, you might want to take them back if you can.

Not just Blue Nile, but any of the vendors on pricescope can probably make an equally beautiful set for you at a cheaper cost.

Sorry...didn't finish reading your post.

Take them back if you can...you can get high quality around here for much less money! You can treat yourself to a vacation with the savings :-)

I definitely understand what the Tiffany name is good for... but stud earrings are so simple! Almost any jeweler can turn up a neat setting for two diamonds like that.

As far as I know, something like the two stones listed below will just be... seriously larger and just as no-excuse white and clean, besides being some of the finest cut diamonds out there - Tiffany or no Tiffany. Of course, between 1.6 and 0.8 total weight, there is allot of room to play with specs

For example... two 0.5 E VVS2 ideal cut diamonds would still be way cheaper (LINK) - not that it is necesary to go that high grades to get the perfect look, of course. But, why not?

If she returns them and goes the "pricescope way", this could be one of the bigges upgrades for the money in the history of retail diamond purchases

Great picture to show what she can really get!

I think you can get a better deal still if you want to go lower in color and clarity, say to an eye clean SI1 or 2, G or H color. I've never seen the need to pay a premium for a famous name. I think that if you can return the earrings for a full refund then you should do it. You can do so much better on Pricescope it you can be patient and do your homework. Good luck!

You have to be comfortable with your purchase. You shouldn't feel "sick" about it. I believe that Tiffany's has a 30 day return policy. If these earrings are going to be a big regret for you, you should take them back.

If, on the other hand, you love them to pieces after the initial sticker shock, then they just might be the earrings for you. Only you can decide (but by all means, decide within your thirty day limit!).

If you are looking for a combo of value and great quality you can get terrific earrings for much less than you paid at Tiffany's. I bought 1.15cttw g/SI2 Ideal cut stones from Dirt Cheap Diamonds and paid somewhere around a third of what you paid. For earrings, you don't need top clarity or color since no one can look at them super closley like they would a ring. Don't sacrifice the cut and they will sparkle like crazy.

Many of the internet vendors can help you put together two great matching, ideal stones for beautiful earrings. (I would have them help you hand pick the stones to make sure you get a great match and superb cut.) DCD has done 2 pairs for me, and they are both gorgeous and much less expensive than the Tiffany's equivalent. Give them a call or email and they will help find whta you are looking for.

Personal opinion: I'd return the earrings and purchase a pair of ideal or h&a cut diamond earrings from a reputable pricescope vendor. You can buy the same size, and save a ton of money OR you can shell out the full amount and buy larger diamonds AND/OR around the same size diamonds and a nice pendant to match. Seven grand is outrageous. Some may find great value in Tiffany branding, but I can't imagine this for jewelry pieces such as earrings where the tiffany styling is completely lost among the your hair and behind the sparkle of the stones.

If you're wanting an item from Tiffany, save up for an original design piece rather than a pair of earrings any vendor can recreate for so much less money.

If the Tiffany brand isn't at all important to you, return them at once! You can do so much better with another vendor. And I agree that VVS/IF for earrings is really a waste. If BRIGHT white is important to you, then maybe the F makes sense, but that clarity grade is a waste of money if I have ever seen one. VS is even questionable in the ear. A good cut and a reasonably white stone (G,H,I) will give you super sparkle at a sane price.

That being said, I know some people really like knowing they have flawless Tiffany diamonds hanging on their ears. I respect that--it's what will make you happy, but it sounds like you just went to T&C becasue it was a no brainer for quality--which is true. But you can achieve the same or better for a lot less money or get a bigger size with unnoticeable drops in color/clarity here. And it's not hard to learn enough of the basics (all easily accessible, well organized info available this site) to know what you are doing.

Good luck.

Well, I personally would never buy from Tiffanys. It sounds like you bought from there not for the name but b/c it was "easy"...NOT that there's anything wrong with that...BUT I could not buy the pair you purchased knowing that these existed...:

And GOG offers you lifetime upgrades when you only spend $500 more. I'm pretty sure Tiffany does not offer that!
