I''ve been cleaning my E ring with Dawn, small brush; followed by soaking in water that''s been boiled. The ring really sparkles.

However, I''m wonder if the boiling water temperature could somehow cause the diamond to crack; i.e. going from room temperature into extreme heated water?

Also, could this process in anyway damage platinum?

Thanks! I always get good advice from this site.

I recomend adding your cleaner to the boiling water (Ammonia and detergent is best - just a dash of each in a tea cup).

It will then be just off the boil.

Long stones like really big marquise should be warmed first by putting the ring band in for a few seconds - they could in theory break if one end of the diamond expanded rapidly.

Do not for instance put the diamonds from the freezer into boiling water as the rthermal shock could cause a problem.

Diamonds are quite happy to be heated to many times boiling point though.
