We have moved forward on an engagement ring and decided to have the diamond certified and then appraised (2nd appraisal.)
It is an OEC 1.56ct H/SI1 diamond.
Question is should we have it appraised before it is placed in the setting (loose) or once it is in the setting to confirm it is the same diamond that was certified?

Thanks for all the help so far.

You want the appraisal to include the setting because you insure the whole ring. So if you are sending the diamond to a lab to be certified, then I see no reason to do the appraisal until after the diamond is set as long as you are happy with the price of the stone and don''t plan on returning it. The grading lab will, in effect, be telling you the condition of the stone. So it should be ready to be set and then appraised afterwards since the appraiser can also access the info off the grading certificate. They''ll know if it is the same stone.

If you have doubts about the stone, you should probably have an appraisal before you send it to a lab.

We do not have doubts. My fiance is hyper analytical. So thank you, that is what we hoped to hear.

I just want to plan a wedding already!
