I have two stones to pick from for an engagement ring and could use some help or opinions. One is a .93 G VS2 EGL certified and the other is a 1.02 F SI1 GIA certified. My brother-in-law is not a certified anything but is a jeweler and I trust his opinion. He is the one who is going to make the ring. He says both stones are very nice and are probably certified right if not tough on both of them for clarity. The cost is for the diamond and white gold solitare setting. The .93 ring would cost $7,000 and the 1.02 ring would cost $8,000. I have read alot lately that it looks like EGL is not as highly respected as GIA. What are some thoughts? Is it worth an extra $1000 for the given specifications and certification?

Thanks in advance

There a couple of things that makes the price different: namely the GIA vs EGL certs and the 1 carat price hike mark. IF the EGL checks out as accurate against the Master stone and is a true VS2, then it is a very good buy because it looks like a 1 carat stone without having to pay the 1 carat markup. How is the cut of the stone? Can you please provide the following on both stones:
Depth and Table %
Pavilion and Crown %/angles

I don''t recall what everything was for both. They are a princess cut though. One number was a 68 and the other a 70 which my b-i-l said these numbers are best around 60 for a princess? And then another number was 72 for both of them. Sorry I can''t help more than that but I don''t have the certificates infront of me. Do these numbers help at all? My b-i-l did say that he thought the table(?) was better on the .93, more proportianate to its size or something like that.

Absolutely! These numbers are a starting point to which we can guess whether the stone will sparkle a lot or not. Please get the depth and table %, crown and pavilion angles, polish & symmetry ratings, and crown height on the EGL stone. Plus you want the ratio of the stone to be as close to 1 as possible. I would think the depth will be close to 70 and the table in the 60s.
